Re-oiling K&N cone filter...
Re-oiling K&N cone filter...
Hi all,
I have a Stillen intake and have two cone filters (the k&n that came with the intake and I also bought a pop charger cone filter). I've read many posts about people putting on too much oil when they clean and re-oil the filter and then it damages the maf, etc. Since I have two filters, I can clean one and let it sit and dry for a few months if it takes that long. Question is, how are people putting too much oil? Are they trying to do it on the same day and then put it back onto the intake without the oil drying up?
If I would to wash and re-oil it and just let it dry for a week would I guarantee I won't have this maf problem even if I oil too much? Time is not a problem for me but I just wanted to know if giving it more time will the oil dry up or I will still end up with maf problem if I oiled it too much?
A quick picture of the last time I swap it with the new popcharger.
I've had the popcharger in for 2 yr and 4 months with about 12k miles.
Thanks...

You make ONE pass with the spray for about 2 pleats. then you just touch up any areas you might have missed.
People tend to spray too much or go over the same area more than once.

There must be at least 100 pleats. So that means you have to spray up and down or left and right 2 plates and repeat that 50 times? That sounds like A LOT OF OIL.
I don't remember how wide of a fan the spray makes. It's like applying one light coat of paint. It's not really rocket science here. I'm counting only the top pleats. Or about 2-3" of area. However many pleats that covers.
Also use a paper towel on the outside of the filter. Any excess should leach out onto the towel.

It's easier than it sounds to re-oil the filter. Once you clean it, it will change to an off-white color. The oil is red, and it's easy to see what's been re-oiled and what hasn't. Just don't go crazy, but if you do, you can dab it with a paper towel to get any excess off.

It's pretty simple just use it very conservatively. FWIW - I oiled the outside AND inside of my filter, let it sit for anout an hour then reinstalled. No problems here and it's about time for me to oil it again.
You know the part #?
Mike;
go to this post and read all about replacement dry filters: Stillen CAI dry filter replacement.
It looks like there is an Amsoil cone filter, which is longer than the Stillen and the AEM dry filter.

do you really have to use a special type of oil ? anyone out there use something other than AEM or K&N filter oil. is there a cheaper solution that does an equally good job ?
i usually put the inside down on a newspaper over night.
but i have a slot.......i realize it might be kinda hard since you have a cone LOL
