New wife hurt new 'G'...which do I keep?

Hi everyone in the G community!
I am new to this site, and I already have a problem!!!!

I just picked up my 2004 Silver G35x about a week ago, and have been babying her during the breakin period.

One of the features that impressed the wife so much was the Manumatic Mode on this amazing transmission. After seeing me shift by nudging the gate, she wanted to try for herself. I said "go ahead, just give it a little nudge forward."

SHE SOMEHOW MANAGED TO THROW IT IN REVERSE !!!

Well, I was a little bit surprised when the car shut down immediately (we were going about 35-40). I threw it in neutral and coasted to a side street, glaring at the wifey who wanted nothing more than to melt into the car seat (she knows how much I love tis car ALREADY!!).
After calming my nerves a little, I re-started the car. Everything SEEMS fine so far. No clunks, thumps or transmission failures yet. The car has 860 miles on it as of this morning.

WHAT SHOULD I DO?

Should I take the car in? What should I tell the dealer? Did my wife cause irreparable damage to my new baby? HELP!

Luc

If there is no CEL light, there is probably nothing wrong with the transmission becasue no error codes were stored in the TCM (transmission control module).

Relax!! This car seems to have computer software that
prevents self destruction. The rev-limiter keeps the engine
from over reving. I bet the Transmission Control Unit also
has software to prevent shifting into reverse when the car is
moving. If it still drives OK, relax. Have the dealer check the
tranny on your next visit. Don't tell them what the bitc& (wife)
did and don't let her touch the G again. NEVER!

haha, give her a hug and kiss, then make sure she knows not to pull the lever back towards her b4 shifting up or down.

Prolly no damage from your 'incident'...... these autos are very tough. Don't sweat it.

I've personally tested 5-6 makes and several rental models for each make, and every single tranny will not engage in R at >10 mph. It will make a clicking noise maybe but not engage until stopped. If a cavilier can do it the the G sure will..but ain't gonna try it in my own car. NEVER buy a rental car as long as I am alive.

Re: New wife hurt new 'G'...which do I keep?

I pulled a similar stunt with my new '03 G35 5AT...

Having just traded in a 5MT Maxima, I was accustomed to shifting manually, so the 5AT on my new G35 seemed like a good idea. It took me a while to get accustomed to pushing the shifter up for every up shift, and pulling down for every down shift.

After I had the car broken in, I couldn't resist a hard run to see what she'd do. When it came time to shift from 3rd into 4th gear... I pulled down, as if shifting from 3rd into 4th on my old Maxima. OMG! Instead of shifting into 4th, of course, I shifted into 2nd. The tranny immediately came to my rescue: It shifted into 2nd, but it did not engage until my speed had fallen off to a more reasonable point. In fact, the tranny went into limp mode, staying locked into 2nd gear. I pulled to the side and turned off the engine. When I restarted the car, everything was fine. I never did THAT again... and everything is still OK after two years. I thought I had ruined my tranny for sure...

You're car is probably fine, but don't let your wife know that. Just keep saying how worried you are about the car but that you love and forgive her... you'll get anything you want until she catches on. (This also might be a good time to talk about mods or other toys you've been wanting. I can think of other things, too, but I'll leave those up to your imagination.)

2K+ maxima's had a safe mode in the TCM, so should the G. As long as it shut down, that was safe mode and nothing was harmed.

I don't think there would be any problem. Like others said, the computer know the condition of the car and reverse gear was probably never engaged.

Hey, it has a good outcome from this incident....now YOU are the only driver for your G...wife will never ever touch it....hehe
