Tires

I have a 2003 G35 sedan with the sport package and purchased an extra set of wheels and tires. Well I had 43K after about 15 months and decided to put the new tires on, I never realized there are two versions of the 17” Goodyear tires? The new tires are not directional and they are V-Rated not W-Rated! Well the handling went to hell it feels like I am riding on balloons it all over the place.

Anybody else have this experience?

Re: Tires

Obviously the Generic version [what one buys at retail] can be quite different from the custom designed to spec tires that come oem with vehicles.

Quite common when people go outside the dealer system.

Many Nissan Performance oem tires are Ultra Ultra performance [and very soft compounded] to gain a fraction in magazine test!..........how one beats established performance cars in braking and handling.

We get to see 2nd-3rd owner older Infiniti's with really junk tires and serious defects in braking [aftermarket performance pads and rotors from cheapo sources] and dangerous wet handling.

The G is very expensive to maintain to as new as delivered standards ----------- tires and brakes/suspension components.

What a performance car is all about .......expense.

Re: Tires

This is depressing to hear but what I am experiencing. I replaced
my EL42s with KUHMO tires and am happy with the results.
Much better than those POS EL42s. Yeah, this car is expensive
to maintain, but it has become my hobby (because I don't have
any other hobby) (married with child)

Re: Tires

Khumos are Korean right? I've only heard good things - will you tell the price paid?

How's that hard/hard treating you. Did you ever try any other settings with the hotckis?

Re: Tires

Sorry I did not add, the fact I purchased an extra set of Infiniti Wheels and Tires from a Guy in Anaheim Hills, CA who did not have the sport package on his 2004 sedan. My wheels are the 5 spoke and the extra set I purchased were a six spoke set with the 215/55 R17 93V-Rated version.

What a difference I can’t believe how crap it handles now!!!

Anyway I guess I need to bite the bullet and buy a new set.

Re: Tires

Yeah, the Kumhos are Korean. They are the ECSTA KH 11s
with 235/50/17 dimention. Handle so much better than the
EL42s. You can get them for $101 at Tirerack.com. plus
shipping. I bought mine at Discount Tire for $$585.60.
I had them do their "special balance" and installed for
around $615. I'm very happy with them. I have the Stillen
sway bars set at Stiff/Stiff and love them also. I honestly
don't know how to determine the correct settings, so I just
went "All the way" with the stiffest setting possible.

Re: Tires

The farther the attachment hole is from the main part of bar the softer the bar is! The right angle arm is proportional.....

Try running the front bar softer than max as this will decrease the understeer. Actually the stock oem front bar is too stiff, but aftermarket want to sell you 2 bars.

The front tires get more and more OVERLOADED the stiffer the front bar is......the opposite of what you want.

Re: Tires

EL42 is a generic brand/model name that describes at least 6 different tire designs......different tread wear, diff tread designs, different sidewall stiffnesses.

New tires are almost always better than worn aged tires not necessarily a good comparison. "My brand new tires are so much better than my old worn out tires"...........think about it.

Comparing two tire both with 10,000 miles on them is a better valid comparison.

EL42 are all season vs KH11 are Summer touring with soft sidewalls [requiring 40 psi +].

Re: Tires

Before they actually balance the wheels, they match the high
spot of the tire with the low spot of the wheel. The tires and
wheels are not perfectly round, so by matching the hig and
low, the balance is said to be better. So they say.

Warning the KH11 have a nylon cap carcass so when the weather turns cold watch out for ply setting over night! Thump thump for 10 miles.

Re: Tires

Q45tech,

Since my sedan is due to have the Sport Tuned Suspension
install this Saturday, do you recommend I change the front
Stillen sway bar to the soft setting from the Stiff, or go
medium? This would be the time to change it.

Re: Tires

Kumho KH11 are Summer touring and have a NYLON cap which along with warm weather compound will make them iffy in cold weather. Thump thump thump for 10 miles every morning.
