ABS, Slip, VDC Off lights on. Help!

Just went on the road today and noticed that the ABS, Slip, and VDC OFF displays are lit. Any ideas what this means? I haven't had time to do a search because I am in and out with the family so any help is appreciated. There is also a noise like a small electric motor that is running at the back right corner of the engine bay. I do not know exactly what part it is but it looks like a small 4"x4"x6" aluminum case with a motor attached to it. Should I unplug the battery to stop this noise so that it does not waste the battery.

Thanks again for any help.

Have you checked your brake fluid level? If its low it will cause some of your dash lights to come on.

Brake fluid is at max so I can't figure out what it could be. The lights have appeared from this morning and until the 3rd time starting the engine. Now all of a sudden, no lights! We're going to take it for a good drive tomorrow and I hope it doesn't come up again.

That pic I included in my original post is part of the braking or ABS system, right? Some of the lines from the brake fluid reservoir lead to it. I hate to bring it in to get checked if the lights are not on and the sound cannot be replicated.

This is a little far fetched, but do you think a recent minor fender-bender could cause this? I was rear ended with a slight crack in the bumper where the license plate is and the other persons plate numbers etched on my bumper.

Thanks again.

Yes, that small box is part of the abs system.

OK. So I had time to research the issue and found some info in the PDF service manual for our sedan. In section BRC (Brake Control System), it regers to what I was experiencing a Fail Safe for the ABS and VDC/TCS system. The picture I included is of the VDC actuator and that was making the noise with the car off.

From what I have read, I would have to take it to the dealer to diagnose because the work would require more than the basics. But I saw something on page BRC-8 #4 under VDC where it mentions that the indicator lights may turn on "if the vehicle is rotated on a turn table, or rolled and rocked on a ship". I live in earthquake territory and had a little 3.0 quake last night so maybe it may have caused it. Just a thought so I guess I will keep track if the indicators come up again.

hey i'm having the same prob now with mine. But when mine makes that motor sound it goes for hours till the battery dies. i found that when i'm driving and i turn off the engine and turn it back on so that the lights go off .. then its ok for me to turn off my car, cause then it won't make that motor sound. but i don't know whats causing it to do that. any luck with yours?

I had this exact problem a couple months back. It is indeed a problem with the ABS system. My mechanic reset the system and the lights and noise have not been back.

Had this problem on my Altima. Turned out to be the abs sensors. One of the rear wheel sensors needed to be replaced. The actuator noise you hear is really bad. If that actuator burns out, the cost to replace is ~ $1500 so disconnect your battery if you must, to stop it but don't let it run cause it could get expensive.

OP are your tires balding? I had/have this same issue, they checked the brakes and said the fluid levels were fine, then they noticed how bald my tires are and said that was likely the problem, I haven't confirmed that yet (new tires going on next week).. Anyone else think bald tires could cause this?

Edit: The mechanic asked and got me to realize that the lights come on and stay on more frequently (and sometimes only) when there's rain.

$0 for the reset, but my mechanic said it would be $500 for new sensors.
