It had to happen....driving nightmare!!

So, I was late this morning for an early breakfast meeting and because of all the road construction in the Chicago burbs, traffic was at a stand still.
I'm late, getting pissed off so I quickly pull out (right turn) and find myself behind a huge truck full of debris/rocks/gravel. I look behind me and barreling down the road is another huge truck full of the same crap. Needless to say, there were stones & crap flying off the first truck and because I was boxed in I had too endure almost half a mile of this abuse.
Get too my meeting, the front of the car has two decent sized chips, plus a myriad of smaller ones, plus my front windshield is cracked when a piece of debris hit it.
I'm happy today.

Sorry to hear that buddy. I had a similar incident happen years back in which a truck from a local tiling company had spilled rocks all over the freeway. I ended up pulling off to the shoulder, but the other cars on the road threw rocks all over mine.

I pretended to be a city employee and found out who was responsible for the spill. I ended up making the company pay me over $2500 to repaint portions of my vehicle.

So you didn't get the license plates of this offender?

No, my entire focus was just on finding the quickest exit.

Re: It had to happen....driving nightmare!!

It just happened to me last Friday. I can't even dodge when tiny pebble of rocks were flying out of this son of a b@#ch gravel truck. When I got out of the car at my work place, I noticed my clear bra saves me. Only a few small marks on the clear bra. My windshield was scraped off a very small portion. Kinda like a crater. I was pissed off that whole day....uhhhh

Always get the license plate numbers then go to the police station to find out who owns the trucks. By law they have to cover there trucks to keep debris from coming off there truck.

Sorry to hear of the damage to your car. I've been in a similar position myself, though I was not boxed in. None the less, I still ended up with a pit on my windshield.

Its hell out there. I have had 2 windshields and a sunroof replaced. Luckily, I have MetLife auto and no deductible glass coverage. I cant believe they havent cancelled my *** yet. The sunroof deal was bad. Just driving along I-5 and BAM, huge crash and glass hitting me all over. I instinctively reached for my sidearm, since I am lucky enough to live in a concealed carry state and take advantage of it. I seriously thought someone shot at me. Still dont know how it happened, but it was #$%%^$$ing expensive. Dealer had to take out the entire roof liner to get all the glass out so it wouldnt rattle me crazy. $1700 bill for the sunroof replacement, plus $1200 in paint work since the flying glass gouged the hell out of the roof and trunk lid. I had to cough up $500 of it for deductible. No more sunroofs for me. If I want sun on my shoulders, I'll ride my scoot.

Clearbra is the way to go to eliminate rock chips. I for one should have my coupe wrapped, but was way too busy during the first two weeks of having my car. A semi decided to cut in front of me and blasted several good sized rocks at my bumper..........got off the exit and took a look. One qtr sized chip on the bumper. Had the bumper repainted and wrapped it w/ Venture after the paint dried a month later.

So far, we haven't had any customers come back w/ rock chips after application of a clearbra. You guys should seriously consider it........it'll save your paint!

Re: It had to happen....driving nightmare!!

I live in the San Francisco (east) Bay Area, and the development and construction up here is constant. I had a "clearbra" installed the first month I owned the car, and it has saved my a** several times. I have been "boxed in" several times by gravel and rock trucks, and been "showered" with small stones. I have some small nicks on the windshield pillars, and on the top of one fender, but the bra has absorbed the brunt of the punishment.

The worst part is when one (or several) "empty" trucks are flying down a backroad coming towards you, and the trailers are jumping up and down as they careen over the bumps. You flinch as you pass, knowing that a stray rock would be travelling TOWARDS you at 60-65 MPH, while you are travelling the same speed in the opposite direction - sounds like a pistol shot as the rock hits with a combined force of 120-130 mph.

Several people in my office have purchased new cars within the past 6 months, and they ALL wish they'd done something about a clear bra - the damage was done before they realized it ! It's not a cure-all, but it's the best defense I know of.
