Z-Tube with cold air extension... Good or bad?

I have a Z-tube with an intake tube extension going down into the fender making it into a cold air intake...How come everyone is so into the popcharger...it sits up high in the engine bay with all the heat from the engine. Correct me if Im wrong but isnt it better on HP gain if you are sucking in colder air? I live in New Mexico so getting water in my engine isnt a huge worry for me since it doesnt rain or snow much out here....

You will probably see pretty much the same gains either way(1-2hp at best). I believe the CAI will shift the power higher up in the rpm range. Our cars make pretty good low end power which is good for day to day driving, so my preference is to keep it there.
Also the intake set-up on our cars is pretty efficient as it is, I wouldnt recommend anything more than just a good flowing drop-in filter.

I don't think location matters at all. Using my live data logger on my scanner, I have found that air intake temps were not that much above ambient temp when cruising.

I gave found through personal experience than the ram air setups down below are really more than a "ram dirt" setupnand my filter would get dirty much faster.

they did a study on a 350z about all the different types of intakes and filters. Stock air box came in second right behind the AEM CAI it was maybe 1-2hp difference

The stock air box grabs air from outside. Short rams grab air from inside the engine bay, which would lead me to believe it makes less power after the engine bay gets really hot. The CAI will grab the coldest air, assumably, but the air has to travel through a longer tube so maybe the gains are neglible.

put it this way, no matter where the air comes from it passes right by the heads and plenum so its going to warm up a little bit. my stock air box was reading 124 IAT yesterday

The air is going to heat up anyway. Just use a Z-Tube with a cone filter on the end of it.

Power difference will likely be negligible.
No SOUND on the other hand....

I absolutely love the sound of a looooooong intake tube on a VQ, and I could care less about the power

You guys...

The BEST combo is:

Z-tube- Mainly for sound. Does not make power.

REVUP Airbox- Bigger velocity stack.

end thread.

I dont think anyone said the "Z-tube" would make power alone.
Any power gaines would come from the high"er" flowing filter mentioned...
The free'er flowing "Z" tube aids in the "higher flowing" intake system....
