03 04 05 06 muffler question

Is the stock 03/04 muffler compatible with the 05/06 cars? Anything else to be concerned about?

No they are not the same, they use different hanger locations, but I think that's the only difference. You could buy a hanger bracket from everythingg35.com if you wanna put an 03 04 muffler on an 05 06 but other than that their isn't much more to it. If you wanted to you could always figure a way to bolt it up.

if you really need to take it to a muffler shop and have them put it in place

All of that makes sense; what muffler is better?

i have heard the 03-04 is smaller.. so it will essentially create a better flow (sound) with the coupe mid. but i cant confirm that.

Depends on what you are looking for. Looks: 05-06 hands down. Larger can and the tips sit flush with the edge of the bumper. Sound: 03-04 as previously mentioned. Smaller can, louder sound, sounds great paired with an 05-06 mid pipe (see DaveB) and pretty good with a coupe mid.

I am currently running a coupe mid on the stock 05-06 muffler and HR Y pipe and I'm really happy with the sound. I have a friend with an 04 Nismo locally who put my 05 mid on his car and really likes his as well. Your choice.

the combo you're looking for on the 03/04's is the 05/06 Middy.. with the 03/04 rear (muffler).. the 03/04 mid pipe is HUGE (about 2/3 larger than the 05/06).. the 04 rear is actually bigger, so you get a deeper sound with this combo.. otherwise you'd end up with the same system as a stock 05/06..? nothing gained.. it's the combination of the 03/04 mid, with the 03/04 rear section.. along with an HR Y-Pipe, the Rev-Up Air box mod.. you get a really sweet sound from all OEM mods.. you lose a good 10-15 lbs or so of mid-pipe and no warranty issues!!

Wow, that sig line looks familiar! I'm running an 05 mid with my HKS rear, but will swap my 03 can back in for the winter. Curious how that will sound...pretty good, I think.

10-15 lbs? Try 25!!!

I weighed them. My 03 middy was 35lb and the coupe one was 10lb. Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised

yeah... I was referring to the difference between the 03/04 sedan mid and the 05/06 sedan mid.. the coupe is even smaller, so yeah, it's going to be much more... but I heard reports of rasp with the coupe mid, vs the 05/06 sedan mid.. but to each his own... I like the depth and throatiness of the 05/06 sedan mid with the stock 04 rear, coupled to the HR Y-pipe.

some folks go with the coupe mid and an H&R rear... it's all a matter of personal preference.

^Oh ok. I didn't realize the 05/06 mid was any bigger than the coupe.
BTW, zero rasp on the coupe mid, I can tell you that for sure. It does drone a bit around 45 esp if under a load (like up a hill) but it's perfectly quiet at 65+, also, if you drop it in 4th around 45 that also quietens it down a lot.

Yeah, the 05 sedan mid looks like a large cigar box.. maybe 12-18" long about 12" across and about 4' thick... the 04 sedan is about 36" long and tapers out from 12" wide, 4 "thick on the back end to about 18" or more and 6" thick on the y-pipe end... it is a BEAST.. flat along the bottom to minimize drag so it long.. wide and thick.. so freakin' heavy too! the 05 sedan is basically the back 1/3 of the 04 sedan mid... the coupe is the traditional can style mid.. like the Z... going back to that huge 10 drum of a muffler in the back.. THAT is where the sweet VQ sound comes from.. that huge resonator chamber for a muffler in the rear.. sedans will never achieve that sound with the hardware we have.. unless you want to retrofit the coupe rear section on a sedan.. but THAT is a WHOLE other project in itself!!

^Nah... I have a looooooooong intake for making VQ noises

I do wish I could pair it up with a coupe exhaust, but I'll probably just end up settling for a HKS at some point.
