2004 G35x Sedan Build Thread
Very interesting turbo setup. Nice work though. How long have you had the car for and has it been reliable? Also what 1/4 mile time you think it runs?
Question to everyone and I don't mean to go off topic OP, but I'm just really curious to know. You guys really think staggered on AWD is safe enough? I mean "as long as the diameter of the tires front and rears are the same it should be good enough" Some say its okay to do and others say better not do it. What is the deal?

i think there is provision for slip that allow some wheels to rotate more than other like when you are in stuck in snow for example. but if the front and back wheels are different diameters won't you be 'slipping' all the time?? and that would be extra wear on the transfer case? the excess wear would be dependent on the different in diameters of the wheels, i would figure. some run a straggard setup with the X but pull the AWD fuse. essentially making it RWD. i have a switch under that dash so while driving i can switch b/t AWD and RWD on the fly. i believe that the 05 X's don't have that fuse unfortunately
I'm not exactly sure either, but after searching around on google and here there is a 2 side story. All I want to do is buy coupe 19" and call it a day without buying 2 sets. And if there is a chance of damaging the transfer case I wouldn't even chance it with my luck. I'm just curious to know that's all. If I didn't daily my car and put 600+ miles per week on it I wouldn't worry as much, you know?
I have a set of staggered coupe 19" wheels on my G35x with no issues. I spent a lot of time on the miata.net tire calculator to make sure I was picking the right tire size. I purchased 225/40R19 for the front and 255/35R19 for the rear. According to the tire calculator, there is only a 0.2% difference between the front and rear. One thing I looked into is how much difference between the front and rear tires the ATTESA E-TS system would allow before it thought that the car was slipping all of the time. I could not find a figure but I would imagine it would be something like 0.5-1.5%. 0.2% is so negligible that I can't imagine that it would cause an issue and it hasn't caused an issue on my car. I do run with the fuse pulled quite a bit but only so that I can induce throttle on oversteer when I want to.
Here are the specs for those two tire sizes from the miata tire size calculator:
Specification Sidewall Radius Diameter Circumference Revs/Mile Difference
225/40-19 3.5in 13.0in 26.1in 82.0in 773 0.0%
255/35-19 3.5in 13.0in 26.0in 81.8in 775 -0.2%
I also checked the manufacturers data sheet before ordering. It included the radius, diameter, circumference, etc. for each tire when installed on the typical sized wheel for that tire size. Doing the math on those values, they came out even closer than what the tire calculator had come up with.
If there was an issue, then when I run with the fuse in I should see the slip light blink more than normal but there is no change. I wouldn't worry about running a staggered setup as long as you size the tires correctly.

Updated page one with pics of a small project I did today. Blacked out the grill to match the wheel setup I'm running now.
As far as the staggered tire/wheels setup, as mentioned by gergdees above, I think as long as they are close it won't make much of a difference. My car has just under 108k miles on it and the previous owner had the 19's on it for probably about 25k miles before I bought it. AWD system is great, no warning lights on the dash, and according I'm running 245/40 18's all around. Even with the wider wheels in the back (9.5 vs. 8.5 in the front) the difference in radius is minimal. This is my daily driver so I didn't want to take any chances either. I feel very comfortable with my setup and it looks good too,

Yeah, eventually I'll be looking for a bumper. It's just a lot of money for no real gains (except aesthetics). I'm upping the boost next spring which will be where the money goes first.

^ yea but the reflectors will always be chrome so the headlights will technically be black/chrome, i just always thought once someone paint the grill the headlights look out of place not painted as well
