Tiptronic issues?

So I have an 03 sedan and when I switch from D to tiptronic it will say 4 on the dash.
regardless what speed I'm going; say I'm in 5th gear I switch to tiptronic it will downshift to 4 or if I'm at 0km/h and I start moving the dash will say 4 and as I start moving it will upshift all the way till 4rth gear.
Also I'm having a problem where if I drive my car for a bit say 20 minutes (just recently noticed this as I haven't had the car for too long) that the tiptronic will not work unless I turn off the car and turn it back on.
I will switch from D to tiptronic and it will say 4 on the dash but if i press up or down nothing happens. However, transmission will work as if it's on D. Any ideas?

That is how the shift logic is on the 03/04. It's normal. When you switch to manual, it always goes to 4. On the 03/04, it will shift up to and stop at 4. In 05/06, the shift logic was changed.

The part about the manual mode not working, or nothing happening,.well that's not normal

Oh so the tranny ECU on the 03/04 will auto shift? or only if you select a few gears?

So like if your at a drag, you can set it at one and it wont shift until you shift it? if your at a drag, set it to three and it will auto shift upto 3 only?

When you are in 5th gear and switch the manual mode, the car automatically gears down to 4th. This is normal on the 05-06 as well.

Ok, Hotdawwgman may have a 04.5, they have different shift logic.

Here's how it works for 03.0 - 04.0:

When in MM the transmission will only go as high as the gear selected, but will still go lower.

So if you put it in [1], it will only run through 1st and then start bouncing off the rev limiter (while onlookers wonder what's wrong with you )

Put it in [3] going like 10-15 and punch it hard, and it will downshift to 1st, run through to 2nd, through 2nd into 3rd, through 3rd and then bounce off the rev limiter.

Now, if you're going say 50 in [D] and put it in MM, it automatically selects [4] and puts you in 4th, but if you leave it in [4] and punch it, it will downshift a gear or two.

On the newer shift logic, it stays in the gear you put it in, unless you come to a stop.

So on a 04.5-06, if you are going 50 in [4] and punch it, it will just lug in 4th.

Got it? Good.

Correct so it seems like it's normal what's happening but for the part were if I drive say 30 mins (haven't fully tested this yet but it's happened to me a few times already) the tiptronic will stop working and the dash will say 4 even if I press down or up so it works as if it's on D sorta as if the computer crashed and the only way to get it working again is if I turn off the car and turn it back on.

03-04 MM was really only a top gear selector. 05+ you can hold any gear regardless of throttle input. The only time an 05+ will auto downshift is going from D to MM while in 5th, it will downshift into 4th.

Yeah, the tip not working is definitely NOT normal

the reason behind the whole 4th gear when shifting into MM is so you can pass the 'car' or w/e you are trying to achieve (correct me if im wrong) which is why if u shift to MM it wont stay in 5th, the car sees it as if you are trying to pass something up.

i have an 04 and it defaults to 4th gear. if u are already driving in D and shift, u can quickly move it over to manu mode and shift up without having the transmission change gears. i don't anything about the 2nd part you mentioned.
