Do these cracks on the belt require immediate attention?

Hi,

Finally, got around doing the spark plug oil pooling check. Anyway, while at it, I check the belts. Both belts have small cracks. Should I swap them out asap? My car is an 05x with 38k miles.

Thanks...

Seems pretty minor to me. Mine are way worse. I've never heard of anyone's belts snapping before though. Just squeaky.

theyre really easy to change out... but i dont think its too bad unless you see maybe chunks of the rivets missing.

04 and 50k. The tech's told me it was cracking last winter. Still havent gotten around to changing it. I know everyone says its easy but the DIY video makes it seems a little complicated. I guess I wont know until I try.

Well the word "easy" is subjective because easy to a pro is like nightmare for a newbie. I do my own oil changes and all the other fluid changes. Is that good enough to do belts?

Depends who you ask. Some people may be able to do it by feel, if it squeaks or if it doesnt squeak and so forth. I just prefer to take the guessing out of it and torque it to spec. Its more definitive.

I think so.. i would watch the video over and over again until you've got it down. and then give it a shot.

Are you a risk taker?

I replaced mine as soon as I noticed cracking. Figured it was time. Only 31K miles but five years old.

doesn't look bad to me. fwiw, belts aren't that hard to change and you don't need a torque wrench.

remove undertray, break loose bolt on each tensioner pulley, loosen tensioners using socket & extension, swap belts, tighten up tensioners (check belt tightness as you go), tighten up the bolt on each tensioner pulley, reinstall undertray, drive over to your favorite watering hole or strip club

From another thread on changing the belts, I wrote this:

My thinking is that if a completely non-mechanically minded muchacha can do this, most everyone else with:

*** all appendages attached,

*** who's breathing, and
*** has a pulse of 60-80BPM,

can also do it. I'd much rather learn just in case I'm ever stranded somewhere on some lonely rode in backwater Alabama or Nevada.

How would you go about checking tension?
