I wouldn't call a $500 exhaust, a $50 Z-tube, and a $200-250 spacer a large amount of money. People regularly spend more than that on wheel setups.

It's all about priorities. I find the stock appearance, sound system, etc. of the G35 to be sufficient, it's not spectacular, but it doesn't need to be fixed as it sits. However, the performance needs help, so, IMO, it's more important to get your car to a level where it won't lose to every 17 year old kid in a 15 year old E36 M3 before you throw down $1500 on a heavy, and sort of unnecessary, audio setup.

My priority set might be different than someone else's, but I've noticed that there are a lot of people on this forum that don't care, but then get surprised when they run slow times at the track, or lose to a car they should be beating.

Performance (acceleration, handling) > appearance > audio

It also sucks to be in an unremarkable car, performance wise, which is what the G35 is stock.

Go look at some dynos. I can PM you the race video, if you really care.

^I understand what you mean.
And yes, I'll be doing most, if not all the mods you just listed, though the performance side is only about half of my consideration, I'm also doing it because a nice intake/exhaust combo on a VQ sounds siiiiiiiiiiick
But beating 15 year old M3s... that's so far down my list it doesn't even enter my mind

I WILL add mods for handling though. I don't care about 'out handling' or anything... I just like to increase the car's 'fun to drive' factor.

My thing about the G35 is... it's not an inherently fast car. While I love and respect cars like Tim's that really are amazingly fast for what they are, I don't really understand spending large amounts of money just to run the same time as a 93 Z28.
Worse yet, you can dump thousands into a G, and still see relatively small HP gains. Dump that same amount of money into a F-Body or Mustang and they're stupid fast.

I guess it all depends on priorities, as you said. For me, performance is somewhat important (In other words, I wouldn't be caught dead in a wheezy fwd econobox) but I'm happy with the G's performance as is. If I wanted a fast car, or a car to build to be fast, I wouldn't have bought a G.

Like you said though, it's all about priorities. At this point in my life, I'm modding the car for my enjoiment, not for competition. So to me:
Appearance>Comfort/Entertainment(e.g. Audio)>"Fun to Drive">Straight-line Performance

I paid under 1000 for my system before labor and I get tons of compliments on how loud and clear it sounds. I'm not done yet either cause I'm getting a fiberglass enclosure in the trunk lid with 4 8" speakers but that's inside the trunk and only used for shows really.. So don't hate cause I got away with a great system that's much more affordable than you thought, I actually paid $50 for my components with tweeters and crossover since they were used again no problems with them either. You're welcome to come to new NJ and hear it anytime. Kthanxbai
Look, I'm not going to sit here and argue with you and turn this thread into a cluster **** of "I KNOW what I'm talking about, and you THINK you know what you're talking about". I spent almost 4 years as an installer with several different shops. I paid dealer cost for all of my equipment, so I didn't get "ripped off" by any means.

Metra makes junk kits for the G. I'm sorry to tell you, but they do. They're cheaply manufactured. End of story.

The problem with compliments is that usually no one who leaves the compliment has any idea wtf they're talking about.

For you to come back and make these two statements, tells me you have NO idea what you're talking about:

...blah blah blah "components with tweeters and crossovers" blah blah blah...
Really? When was the last time you saw components without tweeters and crossovers? Unless you're buying individual pieces to run an active setup and bi-amp them, but I'm sure I've already lost you...

I'm not done yet either cause I'm getting a fiberglass enclosure in the trunk lid with 4 8" speakers but that's inside the trunk and only used for shows really..
Seriously? Wow...4 8" woofers will not fit in the trunklid flat, and if you start angling them funky, it's gonna cause resonance, and sound like **** anyway. Another "sound like ****" factor, is going to be the lack of enclosure space. So just stop trying to take **** that you saw in a magazine, re-post it, and act like you're uber cool.

For me personally (and I bought this car when I was 17 mind you) performance was the last thing i really put any kind of thought into. It is more than adequate for 95% of the drivers on this forum. 0-60 in the 6 second range, and they do 150mph. What more do you need? I don't race to school, work etc. In fact, the only time i ever even use anywhere near full potential of my car, is if im acceleration down an on ramp or doing a little highway high speed cruising going to school. Only time i ever really go near the pedal.

I just enjoy cruising, listening to music, etc. It is what I enjoy. Same goes for a LOT of people on this forum.

If you like performance, thats fantastic. We need a little variety on the forums.

Lmao dude if the metra kit was that bad it would of failed on me already and I haven't had any issues, it's not like it has anything to do with the sound of the audio system, it's just a dash kit. I'm not offended by your comments by any means I'm enjoying my system and I spent way less than you. I'm not getting 4 8" woofers. They're speakers for mids and highs, not for bass. My friend from my carclub already got his system done. He has an enclosure in the trunk with 4 8" beyma competition speakers and they do fit nice and you can't stand in front of the trunk without covering your ears. Trophies on every show and guess what amps he's running? Yup you guessed it, soundstream. Who cares you're an installer, there's so many installers that do ghetto @ss installations and don't know what they're doing and has to be fixed by another shop and I'm sure that would be the case with me if you did work on my car the first time

Yeah, idk why, but I enjoy going to the strip/racing, even in this car. It's been like that with every car I've owned. I don't run the fastest times, but I always have fun. Mine looks like crap, 16s and all, but it ran a decent 1/4mi with it only exhaust/plenum. I think that's why I was interested. If I ran a high 14, I might've skipped the mods, but I've been fixated on a 13.9 for years now. We'll see if that happens when I go to the track this month/next month (a few more mods).

It's not a Mustang, but I always mess with what I drive (and beat a few Mustangs in the process). The word compulsion might be correct. One of my favorite things about modding for speed is watching the tach needle swing towards redline faster after a mod.

To be honest, sometimes I would like to paint my lowers... but if I get into exterior mods I feel like I'll spend a lot of money on a car that already has a lot of miles. Right now, the G35 just needs to last a couple more years. I have 130k on it, and whenever the automatic transmission blows, I'll look into a 5.0 Mustang. Then I won't look like a duck out of water at the track!

As for the BMW comment, I have a friends with BMWs that always make off-hand comments about G35s, so it's nice to occasionally shut them up. They really are a different car owner demographic (douchebags), even if they are my friends.

I think Mustang5L5, 4DGS and a few others on here really have the right idea.
Have a 2nd car and build it for track use

Personally, I've been keeping my eye out for old 240SXs for that express purpose

Guys hes 17!!!!! not 23! This car has 260hp stock you know to get that out a srt4 dodge caliber would be serious work!
This car is fast enough for you the way it is!
Im 21, broke, and a full time student! $200 is a high price for anything that wont make me money! thats that!
Some guys on here are engineers, lawyers, and medical professional! what they call chump change we call boooooku money!
understand the gap in our lives and it all make sense!
Think of it like this guy can you pay 300+ dollars for a speeding ticket and it wont hurt u at all!?
For me thats painful so why invest in a mod i would end up getting me a ticket and might have to sell just to pay for it!
IDK, this is ur first car i believe its 3 fast for u as is!!!!
even if u have the cash at your age and driving level i think u already have to much on your hands! I would go more looks than performance for now!

I agree with this guy and Im in the same boat. Im happy to have a car that pretty much have everything I wanted in a car. {Powerful motor, 6mt, rwd, leather, sunroof, decent stereo, good looks}. I'd rather throw some tint on the car and pick up chicks and make a mess in the back seat than drag race and speed and get tickets.

I donno im just saying.
