Upgrading 03 with 05 parts?
Upgrading 03 with 05 parts?
So the new engine has a few more horses. What do you think are the odds of swapping out a few factory parts to get the same hp increase while keeping the reliablity? Anyone checked into this? What has changed to get this increase? A better exhaust? Intake? ECU?
Re: Upgrading 03 with 05 parts?
Apparently it's internal parts, probably both in the head and block. The cost of the swap would be very high (basically a new engine from infiniti). After a while used 05 engines could be purchased probably for $1500 or so from junkyards. Once that happens it's possible pending the ECU could swap in and work with the rest of the car. Even at that point you'd be looking at ~$3000 installed if you're lucky; not worth it.

Re: Upgrading 03 with 05 parts?
Here's an excerpt from the Infiniti News website about the engine changes for the 05 models...
"For 2005, several modifications have been made including a new electronic exhaust valve timing, improved cooling and air flow and strengthening of several components, resulting in an increase of horsepower and torque to 280 horsepower (from 260 hp) and 270 lb-ft of torque (from 260 lb-ft) for models equipped with the advanced 5-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission with manual shift mode.
The 2005 G35 6MT model with close-ratio 6-speed manual transmission receives an additional horsepower increase, bringing it to 298 horsepower (torque remains at 260 lb-ft)."
So from that the new changes are variable exhaust valve timing (different cam for exhaust timing), improved airflow and cooling (that's a bit vague), and strengthening of several components ( I assume internals such as pistons, rods, etc.) Also I wouldn't find it hard to believe that a retuned ECU would accomadate these new additions. So bascially, it seems trying to upgrade your pre '05 G would not be bang for your buck as there seems to be a lot more work and parts than just easy bolt ons.

Re: Upgrading 03 with 05 parts?
It would be nice to have the extra ponies...but on the subject does anyone know if the numbers for the actual change in performance was released? Also, I want to install the aluminum trim in my sedan...is that going to be feasible at a reasonable cost?
Thanks.
Thanks.
