Burned 2 quarts after 5000 miles, oil consumption issue?
I changed the oil myself on my G35 for the first time today and I noticed that I'm down about 2 quarts after having driven for 5000 miles since the last change.
2006 G35 Auto
55K miles
Motul 8100 eco-energy since 3k on the odometer
Normal oil change internal 3750miles
Driving habit, stop and go los angles freeway traffic. 60miles daily, about 2.5 hours commute total.
I'm going to monitor the oil closely and see how much it's burned on the next change. Also will get a UOA done, been meaning to do that for a while now.
I got a few questions:
1. This is my first time changing the oil on the G35 (changed the oil on my accord many times before), I had the front end on rhino ramps. Would it be possible that some oil was still in the pan? And how much?
2. Does 2 quarts seem normal for the kind of driving I do?
3. Anything I should do while monitoring the oil?
4. Any tips on using the dipstick? I can never get a good reading on it.
Thanks!
For those wondering why I haven't changed the oil myself until now; I had been getting great deals on full synthetic (motul 8100) oil changes from my local nissan dealer for the past few years, so I've always just taken my car to them. But at last, the price has gone up from $50 otd to $80+tax, so it's not worth letting them do it any more.

before you go flip out... ( which i would do if i every suspect 2 qts short)
Do you own stuff so you know it was full to begin with and also make sure your not leaking any oil, valve covers seem to leak a lot on these engines.
1. he ramps shouldn't play a role.. you check oil level on flat ground and then drive up on the thing and check oil when your back on the ground.
best reading i can do is to check in the morning before you start up the car. Or let the car sit for like 2 hours and check it then.
2-3. Check oil levels once a week and make your own judgement to add or not. I forget the "normal" oil burning level but its about .5 for every 1500 miles.
4.i would throw this example out because you were not the one who changed the oil. plus i would use a more common oil, mobil1,penzoil plat, amsoil, castrol syntec. and then do a UOA on that at 3750miles. this way you send to blackstone or w/e company a sample that they are more used to. VQ35 with m1 or pp, they have seen that least 100 times more then VQ35 with motul.

i run full synthetic in my car and i change mine around 3000 miles all the time . i just changed mine a few days ago after hitting 4000 miles and i still had a good amount of oil :-) ... reason why i change it so often is to be safe and i don't mind spending the extra bucks to have a fresh oil change on the car :-)
Does not matter what oil you use when you get an UOA. All the oil samples are saved per engine not per oil.
So if someone used Joe's Motor oil, or Castrol the numbers will be compared to the Universal averages between all the UOA's Submitted for that specific engine.
The only data I can contribute is from my 02 Altima, I had a VQ and changed it every 10K kilometers. I would need to addd qt. between changes and was usually down another qt. or qt. and a half by the time the change came about. My oil analysis always came back spot on for wear but I always thought it went through too much oil. To the OP, 2 qts. seems to high for me...doesn't seem normal for that oil change interval.

For over 40 years the auto industry has considered 1 qt. or L per 600 miles or 1000 km's to be the definition of excesive. If you don't use that much oil and get a free engine, good for you.
I've done reading in the past. Reduced oil consumption has been reported before. But it's been awhile. Of course if you have worn rings or valve guides, nothing will help that. Perhaps a thicker oil.
