Why so many 2003 G35s for sale?

Hi, I'm not a troll. I own a 2004 FX45 and am helping my sister-in-law buy a used sports sedan for under $30K. Her first choice was a Lexus IS and I talked her out of that. Her next choice is an Acura TL. I don't have anything bad to say about that car, having been a very satified Honda Accord owner until I upgraded to the FX45. I'm trying to steer her towards a 2003 G35 w/NAV. We found one that fits her budget plus it only has 28K miles. Her concern is that there is a whole sh!tload of these cars for sale whereas there are very, very few 2003 TLs for sale. Can anyone explain why so many G35s are back on the market? Is it mainly due to the 2005s coming out? I know that 2003 is the first year out for the G. Should that be a concern for her? I don't want to lose face by recommending the car to her w/o doing my due diligence. Thanks all for your advice. We're going to see that 2003 G on Saturday so I hope to hear from some of you before then.

They appeal to different markets. Gs are for the semi-affluent sports enthusiast with a penchant for the new. They're also for the "I can't quite afford this car, but I want it" crowd.

When crowd 1 sees something new, they dump what they have and go for it. Whether it be the '05s, RX, etc. When crowd 2 realizes they can't fit the payments into their budget, they dump the car.

The TL, however, is more "comfortable". The crowd tends to be a bit older and penny-conscious. For what it's worth, don't even THINK about an 03 TL. Plagued with tranny problems from day one. The G hasn't had any major TSBs/recalls that would make me jump away from it. Yes, the brakes kick up a lot of dust, but they're under warranty for years... I'll just put on ceramics when that's done.

I dropped my sedan after 2 years only because I had been wanting a coupe. Now I miss my sedan = (.

I don't see that many for sale around here, just what do you call a "sh!tload"?

Re: Why so many 2003 G35s for sale?

On www.craigslist.org in the SF Bay Area, there are 19 used G35s for sale right now. There are quite a few Acura TLs as well but that model is a few years old whereas the G only came out last year. So why so many 2003s for sale? I'm comparing it to used FXs of which there are none on craigslist.

Out of curiosity, how many BMW 3-series are there for sale? That would be a better comparison vehicle than a TL IMHO.

Given the population in the Bay Area, I wouldn't consider 19 that big a deal, there are a lot of dealers (like 7) in your area, so a lot of G's have been sold there, here, there is only one dealer in the entire state!

I'm sure the number of G's coming back in is due to lease returns. Not sure why you're seeing few '03 TLs for sale. Those are all over the place up here. The 04s are hard to get used, but that's expected since the car has only been out for a year. Give it time.

I think you are right, the "original" '03 G35 is coming up on being around 3 years now, I still don't think 19 in the Bay area is a "sh!tload" though!

Re: Why so many 2003 G35s for sale?

A possibility is that the 2003 was an early 2003 model, so people keeping them 2 years (lease, etc) may be turning them in now, while a 2003 TL which came out months later haven't had a chance to show up as much.

Re: Why so many 2003 G35s for sale?

You also have to remember that the G35 has been a top seller since it was a new car and appealed to many. Plus the G received amazing reviews. These two factors lead to a ton of sales. This leads to a good number avail now.

The 03 TL was in its last year of that generation. With the 04 around the corner, many people waited to purchase the new generation -smart decision. The 04 blows the 03 out the water.

Since there are a lot of G's for sale in your area, it might help you get a good deal, supply and demand. Get the G!!! I decided to get a used one myself instead of an 05 (which I think is sweet) so that I can guilt-free get the next gen when it hit the streets.

Re: Why so many 2003 G35s for sale?

You make it sound like the large selection of G's is bad.

The car is awesome. Its been ranked at or near the top my most automotive magazines.

If I were you, I would be very pleased in the large selection. Gives you a better selection and a little bargaining power.

Re: Why so many 2003 G35s for sale?

Well I talked my sister-in-law out of buying the G sedan. I just wasn't comfortable seeing so many of them for sale only a year or so old. Anyway, thanks for all your replies to my inquiry. In case you're wondering, I talked her into the G coupe! Awesome car, btw. Most of the folks selling their sedans were upgrading to the coupe. I thought she ought to do the same.

Re: Why so many 2003 G35s for sale?

kevink was onto something. The 2003 G35 was available from late February, 2002 until December 2003- a whopping 23 months. The reason you see "so many" is that the 2003 model of the G35 was sold for nearly 2 years.

So, if you want to compare ads, compare the 2003 G35 to 2002 AND 2003 IS, TL, 3 series, etc. The other guys 2003's were only sold from about November of 2002 until December of 2003- one normal model year, or 10 months less time.
