03 Sedan AC troubleshooting

When the weather turned warm this year, I found out the air wouldn't blow cold. Fan works, fuses look fine. Right about then I got real busy with some other things and as we mostly use one of our two cars we defaulted to using the other car in hot weather, but I need to get this fixed of course.

So last week, on the advice of a friend, I tried charging the line. Followed instructions to the T but the can simply won't get any lighter (well maybe a little). I checked that the can, hose to the car, input to the car, all work ok, it's just that the car won't accept any refrigerant. Which makes me conclude it's not a leak and the original refrigerant is still intact. So gotta look elsewhere.

One thing I did back in winter was replace both fan belts as a maintenance item. As I did not have a belt tensioner gauge I guessed at the tightness. The first day after doing this the compressor belt squealed slightly, so I tightened it up to the point where the squeal stopped, and didn't think any more of it. Now I'm, wondering if somehow, overtightening might have killed the compressor? I don't even know if that makes any sense.

Would appreciate suggestions on what to do short of taking, it to a shop now. I realize I may have to do that in the end, and if it needs whatever I'll get it done, but what I am looking to avoid is to get ripped off on repairs I don't need (yeah like I'm the only one :0 ) So would hope to get some thoughts on what else to check, etc.

To summarize, fuses look fine, both fans work. Compressor does not kick on.Car will not accept more freon.

Check the pressure. If it is too high, the compressor will not engage.

You should never add refrigerant, unless you know what you are doing. You can ruin your AC that way. If you are not an experienced car ac guy i would take it to a shop and have them evaluate it.

You can try these few things, but I wouldn't go beyond that:

put the guages on the low and high side and check to see what the pressure is. and then we can see what the problem is from there.
