Can 04 brake wear be fixed permanently

I was planning to get the 05 but Infiniti ****** (are we allow to disclosure the dealership name here?) told me I can get 04 for 27k. I asked about the brake wear concerns for the 04s because they seem to wear out every 10k. The 3 year/36k warrant is nice but it's just 3 years. The saleman told me the reason for the short brakes wear is because they were too small for a car with so much power and torque. The 05 have enlarged braking system and the only reason I am consider the 04 I might trade it in later.

There will be very strong competitions for the G from other manufactors.

E90, the new BMW 3-series will arrive sometime in May and hp will be almost the same is the G, probably 10 to 20 less but they have low peak torques that could make up the differences.

Lexus IS350/250 probably arrive sept 2005. Rumor has it the IS350 will have 300hp. 2007 they might throw it a hybrid.

Acura TL AWD. No ETA yet but I think Honda does not want to release it because it might take away sales from the AWD RL. So 6 month is good guess.

Unfortunatly I don't have the time to wait for all these new cars to come out. My current car still runs but it's time for 90kservice , new tires, new timing belt, new brakes. So goes to my main question: Can the 04s brakes fixed to a point where it could last 30 or 40ks?

Thanks

Some salesmen need to think before they speak. The brakes are not too small. Otherwise there would be tons of warping rotors. The problem is that the pads and rotor material is soft. Thats the reason you get such amazing 60-0 braking. I have 19K miles and recently had the 15K service done. The service tech said my brakes are fine. I think some people are just brake happy and wear them out too soon.

Some of those other cars you speak of are going to cost way more than a G35 and others will only exist in the minds of message board junkies.

The G35X still has the same 'old' size brakes as the 2004.
However, they changed the pads for 2005. Maybe you can use those pads on a 2004 G35 sedan and get extended life? I was told the revised pads on the 2005 G35x will last longer now. No idea how much longer.

Thanks shodog. You are right about the brake size. I call up the service department and they told me that the brakes size are the same but the rotor and pads are different between the 05 and the 04s. BTW what is a good price for the 04 anyway?
27k for leather and 25k for cloth. Is that reasonable?

Brake pads and rotors are consumables. It's like oil, gasoline and tire rubber. If you're put off by the consumption of brake pads and rotors what are you going to think of the gas mileage?

Just a thought.

Hi Cale

Well brake pads and rotors are suppose to last 40k but they wear out at around 10k. On sticker, the G gets 18 city and 25 highway mpg. Now with the same formula if the G gets 5 to 6 mpg than I would have the same concerns as I do for the brakes.

As for my brake concerns my friend suggest that I drive first 36k with the original brakes, then switch to aftermarket after the warrantee expires.

Hi what2do,

The 10k mile life of the brakes is purely hypothetical. My G35x has 12k miles on the brakes and they are not worn out. I can't say when they will but at that time I'll replace the brake pads and have the rotors turned. If I replace the rotors before the warranty runs out, I'll be surprised but that may be the price for their fine performance and that of an extraordinarily good car that makes me want to DRIVE.

I'm not saying that you shouldn't be concerned. I just think that your mileage may vary.

What do you mean the rotor material is soft? It's iron, otherwise it wouldn't get rust on them, hmmmmmm..........

As you know, there are different grades of steel used in rotors. My assumption is based that if the pads are able to significantly wear the rotors down to a point where it is unsafe to turn them, then the steel used to manufacture them is not as hard as on other rotors that last longer. Therefore the material is softer than others

Break wear

I have over 16 K miles on my 2004 G sedan. I drive fairly aggressively, but 75 percent country roads and highways. Recent inspection showed my breaks have 50 + percent left.

04 brakes

I have an 04 sedan AT with 10400 miles. Just had it at dealer for warranty service on a door gasget and tire balance. Brakes are still fine with lots of life left. I drive on I95 stopway...ur freeway in the state of Florida. It is constantly stop and go or whoa....gotta stop now !! I try not to beat the daylights out of em but don't drive like a p***y either. The 04 will be fine unless you like to beat your machine frequently.
