Scroll down to 19 & 20. Shows removal of the shift ****. (This is from an IPOD installation.)
The **** is removable within 10 seconds with no tools except finger nails. Be careful not to let the clip go flying. Store it somewhere safe.
If the round bezel you refer to is the round piece with the drive mode selections, it is secured to the center section with 3 phillips screws. It comes off. A small flat screwdriver is helpful to remove all the switch wires to remove the console from the car.

Turn the key just enough to shift the transmission into neutral. Do not start the engine. Make sure the emergency brake is on and the car is on level ground. Remove the shift **** per the IPOD instructions. Remove the center panel per the IPOD instructions:
From #20: "Remove Center Panel. Lift the console up in the back, directly behind the cup holder. There are no screws, just clips. Then slide the front off by pulling it towards the back gently. There will be a few electrical harnesses you will need to disconnect."
Pry the sides of the console apart very slightly at the rear behind the cup holder, using your 4 fingers on each hand, to lift the console up at the rear. With the shifter in neutral you will be able to lift the console over the shift lever and over to the passenger side. Then, using a small flat screwdriver, fit it into the openings of each electrical harness connector to free the connector from the switch. After all connectors are free the console will be able to be removed from the car.
Push down on the naked shifter and put the car back into Park, then go work on the console. Take a short break and be glad that you didn't scratch your radio face because of the close proximity to the console as you struggled to remove the harnesses. The hard part is finding the holes to put the screwdriver into to allow the harnesses to come right off. You don't want to pull too hard and mess up the wires going into the connectors.
Once off, the console underside shows the 3 screws that hold the 2 pieces together which comprise the top side silver bezel plate and underside plate which I believe has lighting. They are both round and fit exactly together. IT WILL ALWAYS HAVE SOME MOVEMENT. I too was pissed off about the noises and determined to insulate or otherwise deaden the sounds. After trying to raise the silver top piece so that it does not touch the console, using double sided tape (only removing one side), I still heard noise and removed all the tape, going back to the original way. I tightened the screws until they stopped. (You know if you break them off you're f**ked.) It still has some movement. Curiously enough, the creaks have stopped, from that section of the console, as well as along the sides, where I had also put the tape to stop creaks. I had thought if I made everything all snug it would insulate against bumps. Seems like it gets too tight and squeaks because of lack of room and things rubbing too closely together. Sometimes I get a little noise up by the ashtray on bumpy road, which is stopped by pressing the console forward toward the dask using my right hand.
Anyway, I don't know if it's worth the effort to try to tighten the 3 screws because the piece will still move when you're done. And if you break anything while trying you will be one pissed off Mo Fo.
It can be moved while on the console, so maybe moving it back into the right positon is the safest way to go, without disassembling anything.
Good luck. I'm starting to learn to live with the various noises and rattles. I focus on road performance and try to ignore the little imperfections that make me wonder about what I got for my 35 grand.
As far as stuff that can rattle under there, I can't say there appears to be anything loose which would cause noise, other than the console and its various parts. I wonder how much it would be to replace, with all the switches. The X has the extra switch for the AWD.
The upper bezel plate does not screw directly into the console. There are 2 pieces which sandwich the console. The lower circular plate screws into the upper bezel plate. The console is in the middle. The two plates then move around a little, depending on which way you push them.
