Ok just as the title says. I keep reading and some posts saying you need a 6" extension to use on a 350z midpipe if swapping onto a sedN while others say you need an 8" extension. Which is it? Probably getting the pipe today and need to tell the shop how much to add. Please let me know. I've got an 05 g sedan and I'm unsure of the year of the z pipe. Does it matter which year? It's not 08+ Im fairly positive.

Ok thank you. Where'd you get your extension? I dunno if I wanna order the extension or have a shop weld in an extension just after the front mounting holes. If I do decide to get the extension welded on is there a certain place it should be put on or is the front just fine. I figured the front would be ok because if I were to get the extension it'd bolt onto the front anyway. I could be wrong tho.

Well alright, looks like everything is set up. I know where the midpipe is at a local salvage yard and I called my neighbor to see if he can still weld and he said he'd do it for me this afternoon no problem. Just hoping they don't want too much for the pipe at this salvage yard. Everything is set up. It's happened too easy so something is gonna go horribly wrong. My plans never come together this well.
I'm actually in the dr's office right now as i write this and planned on running to get the pipe after this but it's 30 miles away and I've got a meeting I've gotta be at at 2 and it's about 35 miles in the opposite direction and it is now 12:08. I think I'll be cutting it VERY close and I won't have time to go look around for other parts. Hmmmmm....maybe I'll come back after the other meeting. I just wish the dr would hurry.

Ok so i've got a z midpipe and over a foot of piping for the extension. I guess this could be done without welding in the extension but I don't wanna risk exhaust leak and my neighbor doesn't mind welding this up for me so I'm going that route.
One more question before we start this, does it matter where the extension is welded in? I had planned on doing it toward Y pipe end where the pipe didn't curve. Anyone else wanna chime in on this feel free. Also, I guess we just cut the hanger and reweld it on once the pipe is fitted after the extensions added. Either than or weld in the extension after the hanger. What should I do?

you can see where my extension is just after my resonator. Mine is a coupe midpipe but was extended to reach the coupe muffler. You can bolt the Z pipe up and drive it to your exhaust shop it's not really ridiculously loud with no muffler even with the smaller Z resonator. You will probably be limited as to where the pipe can be extended for placement of the resonator under there.

i layed the pipe on the ground under my car to see if there was a difference in the exhaust piping and there really is no diffference except for the length and the resonator size.
i don't know if anyone else has welded on an extension but my plans are to lay the midpipe down on a flat surface and make sure it's level. once level, brace the midpipe so it can't be easily moved. after it's braced, trace the position of the mounting flange onto cardboard or similar material and set it aside for later use. i'll also draw a short, straight line down the midpipe to the flange. i'll then cut the mounting flange off. after the flange is off i'll prepare a 6" long piece of 2.5" diameter exhaust piping by using a straight edge to draw a straight line across the length of piping being used. i'll then match up the lines on the midpipe with the line drawn across the 6" extension and tac it into place. make sure the pipe is straight and tac it a few more times to make sure it's secure. you can then start lining the flange up with the other end of the extension. if you need reassurance it's in the correct position then this is where the piece of cardboard you used to trace the flange comes in handy. once you're sure the flange is correctly positioned go ahead and tac it so it's secure. once it's secure go ahead and finish up welding the flange to the extension. afterwards go ahead and finish welding the extension to the midpipe. once your done welding you can clean up the welds with a grinder and wire brush. you can also hit them with some heat resistant paint to protect against rust if you're really worried.
anyway, now that you know my plan, i'll let you know how it turns out and i'll post some pics for you all as well.
