I must say I have two "favorite" cars. One of them is the first car I ever owned. Bought it myself by working odd jobs. My payments were $63.00 a month. The car was a used 1975 Chevrolet Camaro Type LT. It was brown with a tan vinyl top and tan interior. I modified it with a rear spoiler, a new pair of 6x9 Jensen speakers, and a CB radio. It's one of my favorites not because of its engine performance but because of its getting-ladies-in-the-back-seat performance, if ya know what I mean... wink, wink, wink.

After the Camero I owned a few more Camaros then graduated to Corvettes. I had two Corvettes until my "dark" period started. I call it my "dark" period because I completely lost interest in nice cars. All I cared about was having something that got me from point A to point B. It wasn't until I bought a used Toyota Solara that my interest in cars was revitalized. I then quickly went from the Solara to a Nissan 350Z back to a new Solara and then to the Infiniti G35x.

Which leads me to my second farvorite car, my G35x. Putting aside the "ladies-in-the-back-seat" issue and focusing only on the merits of the car, the G is without a doubt my favorite car.

1973 VW Type 113 (Super Beetle)
1981 Mazda 626 "Luxury" (626% POS)
1990 Ford Taurus L Wagon (ok appliance, carried lots of stuff)
1990 VW Jetta GL (Most Loved Car)
1992 Honda Accord LX (OK Appliance but hated it! girl car!)
1999 Mazda Miata (fun but long forgotten)
2004 G35 6MT Sedan (By far "best and favorite" car, as distinguished from "most loved" car above)

The purists try to get the car as close to the way it left the factory as possible and the National Corvette Restorers Society runs events that grade your car not against other cars but against how it stacks up against how it left the factory with regards to originality, correctness, and condition. These guys know the configuration of the smallest screw of the car and there are many companies that sell correct reproduction parts. A lot of fun if you are into this sort of thing.
Oh, I know those guys are very sure what goes where! And, I know there are also a lot of them out there that have been made not-original, wouldn't want one of them for sure. When I was selling my '68 Mustang in '72, I had a guy with a '56 T-Bird want to trade me straight across, the car looked great until I opened the hood, he had heavily modified the engine compartment to accomadate a larger block engine, I couldn't believe that. The Mustang purists are there too, I had thought about buying a 60's model, but found so many that were questionable! OhOh, we seem to be hijacking this thread, oh well!

This is the list as far as I can remember (in Chronological Order of ownership):

1977 Honda Accord (Hatchback) - used
1981 Plymouth Colt (Hatchback) - used
1988 Mercury Sable LS Wagon
1988 Toyota Tercel (Hatchback)
1990 Honda Accord LX
1991 Ford Escort LX Wagon
1993 Toyota Camry SE V6
1993 Subaru Impreza AWD Wagon
1996 Subaru Impreza Outback Wagon
1987 Toyota Celica Coupe - used *
1993 Subaru Impreza Sedan - used *
1998 Nissan Maxima SE
2002 Subaru Outback Wagon
2003.5 G35 6MT Sedan
2002 Chevrolet Prizm - used **

[* & ** These were initial cars for my son and daughter, respectively]

All of the above, except the Sable Wagon were stick shift. We currently have the last four in the list. The Camry SE, the Maxima SE, and the G35 have been the most enjoyable to drive. However, all of them had their endearing qualities. My wife loves wagons, and swears by AWD now, as you can readily tell!

Cars I almost purchased:

1990 Mustang LX 5.0: Never liked the GT with it's louvered tailights and side skirts. This was the sleeper mustang in a plain wrapper, but my brother in law talked me into the Miata. No regrets.

1993-1995 RX7 Twin Turbo: Still think this is one of the best looking cars made in the 90s. Test drove one and it was hard not to scratch the check. However the engine fires, oil leaks and blown turbos scared me away. There is a black one here at work and it looks amazing.

2003 Altima 3.5 SE: Almost bought this car last year. Nice looking car from the outside, but the FWD kept me on the fence. If some of you think the G35 interior is a little bland go sit in an Altima. When a friend of mine bought a G35 the Altima was nothing but a memory. Glad I didn't pull the trigger on that one.

OK here goes, if memory serves me right.
Oh yeah, turned 40 yesterday(yikes)

1976 Ford Comet(Lime Green) - This was about as bad as it gets.
1978 Cutlass Supreme - For the time it was very nice, 8 cylinders in this one.
1986 Honda Accord - The usual, no problems, very reliable.
1994 Honda Civic - Reliiable but not much of a ride
1996 Honda Accord - The usual, no problems, very reliable.
1997 Chrysler Grand Voyger minivan - Doing the kid thing you know.
1999 Isuzu Rodeo - SUV, ok for SUV stuff I guess (wife kept crashin the minivan)
2000 Honda Accord - The usual, no problems, very reliable.
2003.5 Infiniti G.35 sedan - The best car bar far I have ever owned. Loving it.

Here goes my history ... btw I'm 32

1989 - Jeep "Sahara"
1991 - Mazda Mx-3 (I'm not sure about model name)
1993 - Honda Accord "LX"
1994 - Mitsubishi 3000GT
1996 - Honda CRX (used) - My Friend gave it to me for "FREE"
1996 - Honda F2 600cc
1996 - Benz 320e
1999 - Volkswagen Jetta VR6
2001 - Volkswagen Golf 1.8T
2004 - 2005 G35 AT Seden

I still don't have my g35 yet, i'm picking it up next Wed. So I can't really say it is the best car I've owned so far. The best car I've owned so far is CRX, I've had lots of fun with that car. But I'm sure g35 will be my favorite soon.

Here goes...

1987-1992: 1982 Mercedes-Benz 300D Turbo Diesel. My first car, a hand-me-down from my dad, who never takes care of his cars. It lasted for a long time, though. Great memories - got me through high school and most of college. Nice amount of torque, but slow as ****. Had to unload it at 164K miles after the crank shaft pulley let loose off its rusted bolts.

1992-1995: 1993 Mazda MX-6 LS. V6 and my first manual tranny. Lots of fun to drive, and was pretty cool back then. Quick enough for me, but then I was just coming off a diesel. The next car made me realize how a car should be, though...

1995-1998: 1995 BMW 325is Sport Pkg, 5-sp manual. This is the car I miss the most. BMW certainly knows how to build them. Way too much fun. Totaled it while in graduate school.

1998-1999: 1995 Infiniti J30. My first Infiniti. Nice car, but had to get automatic because girlfiend (then, wife now) can't drive a manual.

1999-2003: 1999 GMC Yukon 4x4. My one and only truck. I bought it mainly for the 4WD since I was moving to CT at the time. Like someone else said earlier, this is when I realized that I am definitely a car guy, and not a truck guy. Horrendous mileage, but with the grille guard and fog-lights, you should have seen the looks I got from the locals around New Haven. The fact that I never got CT plates and left TX plates on it helped.

2003-now: 2003.5 Infiniti G35 sedan. Moved back to TX (naturally) and didn't need the rig. I was actually considering a return to BMW before I bought my G. Price difference and amenities swayed me. Certainly my favorite automatic I've owned. The BMW still lingers in my mind, though.

These are all of my cars. My wife's cars (which are also technically mine) have not been as exciting, except maybe her old 1995 Acura Legend Coupe.

BTW, thanks for starting this thread. It was nice to take a nostalgic walk down automotive memory lane....

cars owned

62,63 and 71 beetle as well as a squareback with early fule injection(problem s problems problems)

First car driven was my folks 1966 Olds F85.

Also had an Opel Cadet Ralley..another piece of crap.
1971 Ford Bronco 302 V8 candy apple red, white hard top and white wheels. (that rocked)

1970 Torino GT (loved it) all repainted and new engine trans...well new to me from your favorite junkyard wreck...but hey, I worked in a service station and things were cheap!
Later years 1994 Mustang GT
1994 Mustang Cobra
2001 Acura TL
2003 I35 (LEMON) Thanks for nothing Infiniti Corporate for no help and no assistance and generally not giving a hoot about customers.
2004 G35 sedan.

I think my G35 best reminds me of my sleeper stock Torino GT with pirelli radial tires on stock rims with hubcaps. It was smooth, fast and comfortable. My G35 is the same but so much more. Like I have stated in other posts, I hate Infiniti Corporate but am glad the dealer helped me out of the Lemon I35.I still took a financial kick in the pants and hope I don't fall in lust for another Infiniti cause I really don't want to support a company that does not give a darn about repeat customers.

1985 Buick Regal - used (Dad picked this one out for me!)
1989 240SX - this is when I started loving Nissans
1995 Jeep Cherokee - used - the "plain" Jeep.
2003 Infiniti G35 - best car, no contest. I looked at this car because of how much I loved my 240SX, which still ran great at 143k.

Hmm, I'm noticing a pattern here. Looks like my next car will be a used Olds

Actually before I got my car I drove my Grandmother's '72 Cutlass. Mmmm, leaded gas.

i believe the 72 Cutlass was designed to run on unleaded but could accept leaded gas.

I'm 46...

1965 Chevy stepside - Paid one of my teacher's $200. Man, I loved this truck.
1974 Ford Pinto - 'nuff said.
1981 Toyota Corolla - Dash cracked, but it ran like top.
1986 Mazda 626GT - I worshiped this car! Between theft, hail damage and garage mates, I had more money in insurance claims on this car than I paid for it. Owned it for 8 years and 140K.
1994 Honda Civic - A girls car, but it was cheap to drive.
1998, 1999(2), 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 Ford Taurus's - Company sleds.
1988 Toyota pickup - My first 4x4.
1988 Toyota 4Runner - Still have it. Mostly a trailer queen now.
2001 Ford Excursion - Still have it. Before a man dies, he should get to strap on an 8000lb turbo-diesel.
1999 Audi A6 - (wife's) Beautiful car, but a piece of crap. You shouldn't have to use duct tape on a car this expensive
2002 Honda Accord EX V6 coupe (wife's) Nice car, if unexciting.
2005 Infiniti G35x (wife's) - I drie it every time she lets me.

What a memory shaker this is! I'm 47 years old - all of these are "California" cars, no rust.

1965 Chevrolet Impala Super Sport, green on black, 283 4-barrel w/Powerglide, tilt wheel & A/C; vacuum gauge (never see these anymore), Cragar SS mags, lowered w/fattest tires I could fit (G78/14 I think). Totalled in a late night "solo" accident.

1962 Chevrolet Caprice, burgundy on black, 327/275 HP 4BBL w/Powerglide, fully loaded w/bumper guards, fender skirts, power bench seat, tilt wheel, power windows, A/C, AM/FM, Tinsloid mags, fat tires, lowered. Traded for:

1965 Chevrolet Impala SS 327 Hi-Po 325 HP 4BBL w/M-22 "rockcrusher" 4-speed w/11 inch clutch, 3:55 Posi, tilt wheel, AM/FM, console, factory tach, lowered, custom painted w/"cobwebs, "candy" panels, Tinsloid mags, fat tires. Totalled this car on Christmas eve, 1975 wearing a Santa suit (age 17).

1963 Impala SS, 1 owner car, 327 Hi-PO 325 HP 4BBL w/Powerglide & Posi, White on Black, power windows & driver's seat, tilt wheel, factory tach, console, A/C, "Wonderbar" AM/FM radio, Cragar mags, bumper guards & extra chrome trim pkg, lowered w/fat tires - smoked when on it but loose as a goose & ran HARD - would bury the 120 MPH needle faster than any of the above - "gave" to my best friend for $200 (wish I had her now!)

1964 Chevrolet 1/2 ton stepside pickup, blue on black, 327 Hi-Po 4BBL w/M-22 "rockcrusher" (drivetrain from wrecked 65' SS above), fenderwell headers & black sidepipes, flared fenders L60/15 tires on 10 in. Cragar SS rims. Totalled in a late night "solo" accident.

1970 Hodaka SuperRat dirtbike motorcycle (100 cc ??).

1975 Suzuki TM125 motocross bike.

1972 (?) Kawasaki 2-stroke 750 triple streetbike - bat out of hell !!

1974 Tahiti Bubbledeck jetboat w/454 Chevy, droopsnoot & Jetovator

All of the above were "High School" cars/bikes/boats.

1971 Porsche 914, white on black, oversized "pumped" 2.4 liter motor w/dual Webers and Ansa exhaust, factory mags (real magnesium), modified "autocross" suspension - like an overpowered gocart, best handling car I've ever driven, 140+ MPH indicated top speed. Wrapped around a tree (last time I drank & drove).

1976 Pinto w/2.8 liter V-6, 3-speed auto, blue on blue, ugly, boring firetrap that ran surprisingly well and was rock solid for 140,000 miles (1st "family car").

1980 Kurtis Kraft "pickelfork" hydro lightweight V-drive dragboat (2 passenger), pumped 427 Chevy w/polished tunnel ram & two 750cfm Holley 4BBLs, custom paint - 750 HP, excellent bracket racer, turned consistent 9.0 -9.5 second (liquid) 1/4 miles @ 128-130 MPH.

1985 Fineline lightweight "pickelfork" hydro V-drive dragboat (1 passenger) w/500 inch Chevy, tunnel ram w/two 1050 Holley Dominators & 2-speed Lenco air shift transmission, custom paint, ran mid to high 8 second 1/4 miles @ 145-148 MPH (my partner pulled the then "world's fastest" barefoot waterskier through the traps at 128 MPH at Chowchilla in 1982 on an exhibition run).

1987 Buick Somerset Limited - First new car ever, silver on silver leather, 3.0 V-6 w/4 speed auto, full power - ran great, totalled when T-boned by Kawasaki Z6 streetbike doing est. 85 MPH on impact - wrong place at wrong time!

Still Have:

1977 MGB (wife had when I met her in '77), has 120K miles, great shape & runs good but needs smog so not driveable at present.

1988 Acura Integra 5MT Black on Black- now son's car with 260K miles, runs strong & driven hard.

1986 Mazda B-2000 SE-5 pickup, white on burgundy, bought used in '90 with 88K miles, has 225K+ now, looks and runs strong (everybody needs a pickup, sometimes).

1965 VW Bug, burgundy on burgundy, stone stock, bought from original owner 4 yrs ago for $700, runs good.

1991 Pontiac Bonneville SSE, Bought new, dark blue on buckskin leather, gold package with gold factory mags, every option known to man in '91 (power headrests ??), everything works. Has 140K miles, runs great, looks great. This will be the car that the kids will say in 30 years "there goes old Mr. & Mrs. Barnes in that cool old Pontiac".

1996 Honda Accord EX 5MT, Black on grey leather, all options, mags, 225/50/16's, 165K miles, runs very good. Don't co-sign for a car unless you wouldn't mind owning that car (which is why I wouldn't co-sign for the green one with green cloth interior). Wifey's car now.

1970 (?) Suzuki Titan two-stroke 2 cylinder 500cc streetbike. Rare as hell, and runs great, but tranny lost 5th gear.

My '04 G35.

Many other muscle cars throughout my high school years, owned in partnership with friends, for "thrill rides" - give us $5 for gas and we'll do burnouts and 1/4 mile runs on the backroads until the fuel is gone" (ex. 1969 Firebird Formula 400 4MT w/Ram Air & Posi, '67 GTO 4MT 389 CID w/three dueces & posi, '67 Chevelle SS 396 with a 427 "sleeper" motor; '68 Cougar Eliminator; and a '68 Mercury Cyclone GT with 428 motor). Favorite was my friends '69 Trans Am, rare as hell and best combination of power, handling, & braking that I knew of back then.

All time favorites are my "G" and the 914.

Hope I didn't put anyone to sleep here.

Thanks - DB

Was that Cougar a '68? I thought the Eliminator didn't come out until the '69 model, which was a new bodystyle. Oh, I do remember a '68 Cougar around here with a 427 AT in it, damn!

Cougar Eliminator

'68 Mercury Cougar 427
