Going to the dealer to negotiate a price

I have a good repore with this dealer but we haven't talked price and tomorrow we will. I want to order a 6 spd sedan with navi, premium, XM, and splash guards. The car lists for $36,870 with an invoice of $33,738 (not sure of invoice amt on $170 price increase). I think $1500 over invoice is the number I will be shooting for-so that makes the my sales price offer $35,528. I think I will offer to buy the car for $35,200 and see how that goes. My other alternative is to subtract the splash guards from the deal and get a price and get the splash guards plus mats as to throw in to seal the deal. Honestly I care more about being able to get the car without aggravation than saving a couple hundred dollars, but I don't want to overpay by much more than that. So guys what is a realistic number for a NJ purchase?

Carsdirect.com has guaranteed pricing at least in my area of $1,500 over invoice so I would think that is do-able even without Carsdirect.com. If not, go home and go through carsdirect.com and try again.

Corridog, 2005 right?

I assume you are talking about a 2005...? I just read a report on AOL (don't laugh, it's not that bad). Anyway, it explained a little about dealer holdbacks (take invoice-dealer holdback, that is what the dealer pays for the car). Anyway, the article said that your target price should be anywhere from 4 to 8 % higher then what the dealer paid.

Also, if you go here you can order (costs $10) the pricing report for the G. (notice the 350Z on that page!) I ordered the report (and did a 30 day subscription to car and driver's buying guide) and that has helped me greatly.

I'm not going to post the consumer reports report on this site, not because I want people to pay for it, but because I don't want to freely distribute some thing that the website is charging for.

Go To Cars.com For Pricing Invoice. I Used Them When Shopping For A New Vehicle And The Information Is Free. You Don't Need To Ask For Quotes To Get Dealer Invoice. Of Course, I Think They Have Links To Get A Dealer Retail Quote To You If You Desire One. I Personally Like Internet Salesman As They Usually Will Give You A Price, Out The Door If You Tell Them, Hey, No BS, Let's Do Some Business. Some Will Want You To Come In And Use The Website As A Lead. If You Force Them To, You Will Get You a Price In Writing Via E-mail

They will be "rare" for a few weeks while inventory builds. Nothing special about the car and if the dealer wants a premium find another dealer.

Wanted to add that where I am in NJ there are 4-5 dealers within 30 minutes of me. They will compete on price to get the sale.

The answer to "What exactly is 'a premium'" doesnt matter because I can see you are just looking for conflict.

Pleasant discourse/conflict huh? No trouble I'll go first,......you blink your eyes once for yes...twice for no ..cool. My understanding of paying a dealer a 'premium' is the joker that pays 'sticker' (MSRP) or above simply because a vehilce is in demand or just plain popular and hard to get. I think the Toyota Prius is a perfect example of a world gone mad. Two to three thousand OVER STICKER because it is frugal on gas consumpsion. It's gonna take quite a while to recoup that excess expenditure by way of good mileage....LMMFAO !!!! But then again, ...I don't think getting a $1500 plus discount on a car unreasonable. Not when they're only getting an initial allotment of four till spring, and not much more after. This is nothing more than cerebral banter in an effort to understand the general consumer thought process. It costs nothing and hurts nobody. Anyhoo...I'm going back to finishing my underdrive pulley...then into work to possibly screw somebody on a price... LOL ..seeya JBX
