Engine Noise at start up
Engine Noise at start up
I have heard the noise from the enigne when you start the car especially when cold. I am NOT talking about the ABS charging noise that comes when the car starts moving and hits the 7mph.
I usually hear this now and then when I start and it comes with 2-3 seconds of the engine starts and normally is not loud every time and you have to pay attention to listen sometimes. It sounds kind of a grinding type noise. I came back after a 3 week vaction and when I started the car I heard the same sound but this time it was very loud, kind of scary. The car although runs the as usual and started on the first crank.
Anyone knows what the noise is and if this is really normal.
Thanks

Seems to be normal for our rides-- no worries.

What you are hearing is the timing chain tensioner. This is a common problem with the 3.5 VQs and some higher mileage 3.0 VQs. The good news is it's not serious and it's really not a problem at all. Nissan labels this as "normal operation". The sound you are hearing is the tensioner rubbing the chain. The sound should go away within 1-2 seconds once the chain splashes some oil on the tensioner. ************************************************** ******** This is what I found out when I posed the same question some weeks ago courtesy of * DaveB *....UBCool....JBX

Thanks for clarification on that noise. I knew it wasn't serious, just didn't know specifically what it was.

The other noise is explained in the owner's manual (ABS brakes) and has to do with the ABS doing a self test after startup and first driving off at low speed. (no worries)

I get that in my Z, and only when it's extremely cold (like below zero!). It goes away after about 10-15 seconds. I'm not worried. I let the car idle to get warm enough to turn on the heater. The noise has yet to affect any performance in the car.

I installed the pre-oiler along with a bypass system, but this is not neccessary, u can just get a stand-alone pre-oiler and there are other companies which make pre-oilers (amsoil is not the only one)

Check your engine oil level just to be on the safe side.
the tensioner rubbing the chain can't be great for the chain even though it is supposedly normal. Eliminate this problem altogether by using a pre-oiler (at least I have done it and I'm very VERY happy with how quiet the chain is no matter the temperature or how long the engine has been off)
