I want to blackout the chrome trim around my windows and my chrome door handles. I've been wanting to do it since I tinted my windows 2 years ago lol. I'm debating whether to use blackout tape or spraying black matte plastidip over them. I am leaning towards plastidip.

With the tape I'm worried about the seams and it just not looking good. Obviously its a time consuming process to achieve the best results. While on the other hand, plastidip requires a lot of prep work taping and preventing overspray, but I feel it will do a better job.

My other concern is the door handles and what would be best to use on them. They will be in contact with hands that might cause it to peel. Anyone that has blacked out their trim and door handles, can offer advice?

 

I would recommend saving up to get your door handles painted, I have seen a couple of my buddies cars with plastidip handles and just like you said they do start to peel. Depending on on the quality of work of course also determines how quickly they will start to peel on the edges. Hope this helps

I agree for the handles though. I think you're on the right track with painting.

 

There is a few users I've seen on here with painted door handles. Look through the picture threads for your car and check it out. I agree painting is the way to go unless you want to keep doing the door handles over and over. No idea how much that service would cost at a professional shop though.

 

I heard people vinyl wrapping the trim and door handles.

 

Just do it right the first time, get everything professionally painted.

 

I've had my door handles wrapped in vinyl for about 2 years now and have not had any problems with it coming off. Even with harsh winters and going through car washes etc. Painting them would be the best option if you can afford it. I haven't used plastidip before, but if you going for a flat black look, I've seen other members that have used it and it looks good.

 

thanks for the responses. I want it to last, so I'd rather spend alittle more to have it done right. I have also thought about going with vinyl wrap. As far as painting, I've read alot of issues with it adhering to chrome?

 

It is plastic, not real chrome. Any professional painter know hows how to make paint adhere.

 

for the door handles I would suggest color matching paint because unless your car is black it will look a little funny if the handles are flat black.

 

Take them off and sand it yourself it wont be very expensive to prime and paint a few pieces I dont think

 

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who wants to do this. I have a Diamond Graphite sedan with tint, and I think the chrome look is fugly.

 

I vinyl mines. Lasted over 3 yrs now. I only had to replace the rear piece of the window, but that was because i didnt tuck it in correctly.

 

I am rolling a black sedan. The chrome looks tacky as hell with 20% tint. Sticks out like a sore thumb on an overcast day. I'm now leaning towards the vinyl route... what would be an avg. cost to have it done? I'm getting a quote from a place nearby that does full wraps, graphics, and decals. Thanks all for the advice so far.

 

Can any of you posters recommending paint, recommend it from experience?

I'm curious what that service would cost. I'm imagining $400?
