Angry Weird explosion in my car!

This morning I start my car as usual and it started just fine. As soon as I start to move the car a weird noise like a live high voltage wire contacting metal started to go off and bam something exploded under my car. I get out of my car and check under and I see all these pieces scattered under my car!

This was so weird to me I honestly thought maybe I just ran it over. So I continued to drive the car and everything seemed to be working fine. I only drove it for around 10 minutes to drop someone off. Tonight I tried starting the car again but this time the same exact noise(like a open high voltage wire contacting metal) started to go off when I try to start car. I got scared so I will be leaving it alone for now.

I feel like my car is rigged with a bomb... what the **** is going on?

EDIT: User Hatchman was on point!!! Starter exploded taking out transmission housing with it!

Interesting. How exactly does half a inch of steel explode in little pieces in a car.

Well have you ever tried to hand turn a motor... your starter does that in a matter of miliseconds.

That long bolt does look like a starter bolt to me...

Starter exploded, took some of the transmission bell housing and other brackets with it.

The starter has one of the highest voltage wires going to it, and it has to turn your entire motor to start it, so it throws out some torque.

My guess, one of you starter bolts backed out, starter was on a little crooked, started eating itself, broke loose the big voltage wire causing that arcing and sparking you are hearing.

At best, you are going to need a new starter, but looks like your transmission housing is gone too... which may require a new tranny or some very good welding to put the housing back together, depending on how bad and how far it cracked the housing. Some trannys you can replace just the bell, when clutches explode, but not on ours.

Good luck... and don't start your car anymore like this. If that starter wire grounds out, it could set your car on fire if the fusible link doesn't save it.

If you keep starting the car like that, you will likely damage the flexplate.

You need to get that fixed ASAP, and unfortunately it looks like it did some damage to the mounts. This might be a tough one to fix cheap
