Recently when I got my engine swapped, the mechanic swapping the motor noticed my compression rod bushings were broken and replaced them. (I knew this, there was a knocking noise and I noticed they were broken when I took a wheel off one day) After we got the car back, there is a lot of squeaking now.

After doing a bit of research I noticed that this was a problem a few years ago with a lot of G35's. Im fine with replacing the compression rods myself this time, I just need to know which are the best ones to get to resolve the squeaking issue? Ill buy entire rods this time to make the installation easier and the metal on my current rods isnt the best, so I rather replace the entire assembly anyway.

Car is a 2005 sedan.

Thats obviously the best choice but also very expensive. Whats the best aftermarket choice for <$100 each ?

edit: and also are the compression rods the same for both the sedan and coupe? non-AWD of course.

FYI.. i changed my compression rods and the other bar (forgot what it was called.. lower tie something maybe?) with OEM.. the bushings had cracks within 6 months.. I wasn't too impressed, and they were expensive as you've mentioned.

 

Were the replacement bushings rubber or polyurethane? If poly, they may have not been lubricated properly. Poly is also known for sometimes being squeaky even if lubed.

Hate to see you replace aftermarket for aftermarket and be in the same boat.

 

They were rubber. Not sure why they are squeaking but that is the only thing that has been changed (other than the motor pull) to cause the squeak. Its definitely suspension because if you forcefully push down on the front of the car with your hands, it squeaks.


I think im going to just replace them and see what happens. Most people dont have this issue when they replace them

There is nothing else it can be, it wasnt squeaking before (it was knocking instead), suddenly they were changed and now its squeaking.

I just went ahead and ordered some Duralast ones from Autozone, easy to return if they dont solve the issue. Wasnt anymore expensive than the ones from rockauto.


If I were to grease the rubber bushings on the new ones to ensure they dont squeak, what kind of grease should I use?

 

Silicone based grease.



If you use petroleum based grease, it will cause the rubber to swell.

 

Today I replaced the compression rods and it was still squeaking. Being my control arms were new and I didnt want to mess with the struts just yet, I uninstalled the front anti-roll bar, (sway bar, stabilizer bar [why is there so many names for it]) put the tires back on and took the car off of the jackstands, and went for a drive. No squeaking at all.


The bushings on the sway bar had 0 (zero) grease on them. Bone dry, and the bushings looked newish and the sway bar hadn't been cleaned. So no wonder it was squeaking so much. I guess the mechanic had swapped these and forgot or didn't know to grease them.


Being its getting late (this took me all day, those nuts and bolts are so tight O_O), tommorow I will clean off the sway bar and grease the bushings on it and re-install it and hopefully all will be good to go.


But I quoted you @Mustang5L5 because you had the right hunch that it wasnt the compression rods. But on a positive note they needed to be changed soon anyway. So I am glad I changed them.
