It's back home! sitrep: 97k, had to drill out the license plate screws today, they were so rusted on. Dad had an Iowa (the school/team) plate cover.. I went to Iowa State, so that had to happen first. Its gone, bought some new hardware.



So.. when it starts getting warm I have a huge DIY checklist. Spark Plugs (and possibly valve cover replacement/gaskets), Accy belt?, check wheel bearings, change coolant, transfer case fluid, Brake fluid flush, Trans Fluid change, rear diff fluid, front diff fluid, power steering fluid check. And then probably a solid week of detailing to do. Its pretty filthy in that picture^ Looks like a terminator was opening the door and scratched up the handle area.

Does anyone know if a fix was ever found for the yellowing of the stainless steel area above the cig lighter tray? Car was never smoked in, ever, and I had the dealer change out the little door once from this issue, but the area above the tray also is yellowing. I think it must be something about heat or air coming from behind the dash and just reacts badly to the coating on the metal.. but not sure. Looks bad though. I also have scratches on the shift ****, need to figure out if I can re-texture that.

Leather is in good shape and I think most of its fixable. Exhaust may need a bit of work.. and the question is stay stock or re-buy and go back to the Stillen Gen2 (only if they will bargin price it.. they need to adjust based on values IMO).

Nice. Yeah, you are definitely in the right age/mileage to replace those valve cover gaskets. I'll be shocked if all of your plug seals are still working.

Look on this site for details on how to adapt the Maxima set for your car, and save yourself about $300 doing so.

 

Ya, I would be surprised if I don't find a few issues, but the car is largely rust free other than the exhaust and it doesn't use any noticeable oil. I think I had the car up until about 74k and my dad got it to 97k, kept garaged and clean. I always carefully measured the oil on oil changes and it was all good back then.

Drove it a bit this morning... she still runs really smoothly. I know it isn't a lightweight, but I've been driving a 7200lb Land Rover for a few years.. and while its 5.0 V8 direct injected ~380hp engine is no slouch.. it still doesn't move like the G.

So ya, a bit of detailing and some pretty simple maintenance and I should have a prime and clean example.

Drove to Marana, AZ (north of Tucson), first tank of gas was 22.7 but I had filled it a few days before so 25 miles or so was city driving, and the wind was out of the southwest 20-30 mph for the first 250 miles of so (and that's the way I was going. Second tank was 24.7 and considering the speed limit was 75 and 80 mph and it included nothing that can be discussed here, I can live with that. 3rd tank, don't know but the needle is higher than it was as the same mileage on the 2nd tank and that includes hitting Tucson at rush hour.

My Saturday afternoon...Swapped out my HR Y pipe for the wider Megan. And swapped out my Megan Test pipes (busted flex section surprise surprise) for some solid ones. Car actually sounds amazing with the little rasp I had left and test pipe hissing gone. Car feels stronger also, now waiting for the 3.5" intake and retune.

 

Does the Camaro really have a badge that proudly proclaims the car's got a 6 cylinder motor?

Drove back from Tucson Sunday and Monday. Only needed to get gas twice, once at the Texas/New Mexico border and then 390 miles away in Colorado City, TX.

26.1 mpg from Tucson to just west of El Paso, 25.7 to Colorado City-where about 200 miles of that stretch had an 80 mph limit. Only needed 9 gallons to fill up when I got home and that tank was 26.2. Considering the 20/27 mpg estimates back in 2004 didn't include 75/80 mph limits, I can't complain.
