Suspension Clunk

About two weeks ago I started to notice a clunk from my front passenger suspension when going over bumps while driving slow. It would completely disappear above 20mph.

Yesterday I jacked up the car to take a look and noticed the bolt holding my sway bar link to the lower control arm had sheared off. I replaced the link, but was surprised when the clunk was still present after. This makes me think that the sway bar link breaking was a symptom rather than a cause.

Some background: Two years ago I completely replaced the entire suspension and steering system. All control arms, bushings, and ball joints and the strut itself are new and quality aftermarket brands (Moog, etc).

When underneath the car yesterday, I did check to make sure all nuts/bolts were still torqued properly and nothing was loose. I also visually inspected all bushings and ball joints and couldn’t find anything noticeably torn or worn.

Any suggestions for what this clunking would be? It does exactly like what I’d expect from a bad sway bar link so my only other thought is that the cheap auto one replacement is also clunking.

check out my profile, does your clunking sound like the one in my video? I took my G to the dealer and 2 independent shops and no one could tell me what the sound was. I decided to have my compression arm replaced anyways because they are prone to failure. This fixed my clunking that I had for almost a year, it was either the ball joint or the bushing on the frame. Hope this helps

Thanks for the response! I checked out your video and that is the exact sound I’m having. If one of those bushings is bad then it also explains why the sway bar link may have been experiencing excess stress and snapped.

Strange because I did just replace those a little over year ago with Moog parts, but I guess aftermarket isn’t always what you expect with quality.

I’m going to order a new one and will reply back if that solves it for any future members with the same issue. Thanks again

Blown struts can make a clunking sound.
