"disc error" with the navigation system...minor rant...

very annoying problem....when I pop out the Navi and agree to the Safety Agreement I get "DISC ERROR". I tried taking the DVD out and putting it back in....didnt work....anything I can try except the dealer? does this sound like a bad disc or a bad navigation....

the navi system has also gotten stuck on me while I was on a long trip and veered of course...it got stuck in the redirecting mode....

After 6 months of using it I'm very unhappy with the navi system (anyone else feel this way?) it has gotten me lost more times than it has gotten me anywhere....maybe it wasnt designed for the complicated highway systems of the NYC/NJ area.... has anyone ever used other makers navi systems and can comment? In my next car...I'll buy a portable NAVI system..that way if I dont like it...it wont be a waste of money.

Navi works fine for me... and seems to do fin in the "somewhat" complicated city of LA (downtown area) when I actually do visit there... I think you should just get it checked by the dealer.

On a few occasions, my car's Navi system had had the same "disc error" problem when starting up, but it has always resolved itself after a few reboots. Plus, I've found the G35's DVD-based Navi system to be very accurate. I use my car for a lot of business travel in FL and it's only been wrong 2 or 3 times in almost 1 year. I believe all car DVD-based Navi systems will give you bad directions one time or another; it's inherent in the DVD-based systems just like you may get bad directions sometimes from MapQuest or Yahoo Maps, etc.

I just had that problem fixed

I had the same thing happen to me a few times with my o4 g35x with 15000 miles on it when I really needed the nav to help me find my way. I reported it to my dealer,(Park Ave Infiniti in Englewood NJ) and they took a look at it and determined it was a problem with the laser reading the DVD. They had to order a part which took less than weeks. When I came in for them to replace the optical reader, they gave me an 05 g35x Loaner for the day which was cool because it was just at 1000 miles. I gave it some gas to see if I notice the 20 hp difference and you can kinda tell at the higher RPMs and the transmition does seem better. The interior upgrades were nice as well with the the exterior being color keyed and the new rims but back to the nav issue... They fixed it in a few hours and it seems better than new. I'm not sure if you're in NJ or not but Park Ave Infiniti has a good service dept with friendly people. Hope this helps

Take it to the dealer- there's an infrequent problem with the system that will cause the disc read error. The dealer here said that about one in five hundred will experience the problem, and they replace it for free.

As far as the nav being off-- recalibrate it. Hold D/N and MAP when it's booting up, and make sure the position's spot on. I drove through San Fran and it was perfect, and it's never gotten me lost in Vegas. I've driven from Indy to here, by way of Denver, from Indy to FL, and from here to Nor Cal. Never miscalculated a turn, never got me lost.
