Dealer oil change?

Hello all,

With my old car, I used to go to Firestone across the corner for my oil change. When i bought the G35, the dealer said to come to them for the first few oil changes before going to other places, which is more expensive. Is this truly a requirement or are they just trying to get a little more $$ outta me? Is there a differentiation?

What I want to know is: Is there anything wrong with performing an oil change yourself? I don't own a G yet, but used to change my own oil all the time on my 94 Altima. I am just curious if there is something special with the G that requires a shop.

(Just in case you read it wrong, I'm not bashing you for not doing it yourself)

I haven't done mine yet, but I believe there's a plastic panel you have to remove to get to the valve and filter.

Search around, there's several posts on this.

the only reason i could see them say that is too keep an eye on your car and make sure nothing is broke/wearing out/needs adjustment, etc. that being said... oil is oil and filters are filters.. a basic oil/filter change wouldnt not be any different if it was performed elsewhere... however the quality may suffer (you get what you pay for)

theres nothing wrong with doing the oil change yourself... just make sure you are able to torque properly. Also retain your reciepts to document the oil change.

myself im going to bring it to the dealer once more then i'll prob be changing the oil myself.

anyways guys gl !

Nothing wrong with DIY, just keep your documentation.
Keep a log of when you changed as well as oil & filter receipts.
If you're interested in DIY my oil valve post This helps with the cover issue.

FWIW,
I usually go to the dealer the 1st couple of times to establish a relationship with the service dept.
After that I do my own. Just watch they don't try to add to the service req'd, which can run up the $$

I just go to Wal-Mart and get the 5qt jug of Mobil 1 5W/30 for $19.89. Pick up a Purolator PL14610 for $5.29 and take them to the dealer. They charge about $18 for labor and I get a wash and vacuum. So for about $43, I get a synthetic oil/filter change by factory trained technicians, and a washed/vacuumed car. Why crawl under there and get that crap all over yourself? It makes no sense to me.

Unless you're tight on cash, go to the dealer. At least 'till your warranty expires. My dealer charges only $34. What makes this service mandatory is the fact that they DO inspect your car.
My dealer found my brakes had less than 25% after only 10K miles. He offered to replace them free under warranty. Would Firestone do that? Would you take the time to check the brakes during an oil change?
