How Big Can You Go?

I'm thinking about getting some rims for my sedan and was wondering what's the biggest i could go without having to use a super low pro tire because i dont want the ride of the car to change all that much. Any suggestions?

A couple guys are running 20's but most fall into the 18-19" range with 9.5" wide in the back being about as wide as you want to go. Just make sure that offset is at least +45 if you go 9.5" in rear. For the front the widest recommendation would be 8.5" with +38 being the optimal offset. Hope this helps some.

I did a front fitment test, hear me out on this.

I removed the spring off the shock so I could us a jack and test clearance at ALL points, including full compression. I even used the fact that the jack's cup could turn so I could turn the wheel side to side even when compressed well into the fender.

With a 255/40-18 Goodyear GS-D3 tire mounted on a 18x8 rim with 45mm offset, I had only 1.5mm clearance from the tire to the suspension upright. Clearance to the fender liner and fender lip was a non issue, but as mentioned, clearance to the suspension was very tight at 1.5mm and frankly just going to a different tire might make for NO clearance, rather iffy at best.

Let's translate my 18x8 45mm offset to a different rim width and offset and see what happens. If you go to a 8.5" rim and a 38mm offset the rim moves 1mm away from the inner suspension and 13mm out towards the outside of the car, remember this point we'll get back to it. Also running a 8.5" rim width and going to a 35mm offset increases clearance from the suspension by another 4mm and moves the rim 16mm towards the outside of the car.

Here's the catch with taking a sedan beyond 245mm front tread widths. You will have no choice by to allow the tire to stick out from the confines of the fender. Up top it will tuck just fine, but sitting at the front of the car and moving your eye front the top of the fender to the ground, you will start to see the tire sticking out at about the halfway point or the axle centerline. From their the body curves inward and will really make the tire stickout. Going beyond 245 widths can be done, and 255's would look ok, just barely. But to some, the tire will be too far out as I've described.

Stay away from 20's. I would go with 18's if you want to keep a nice soft ride.
