Thumbs down My first oil change...Think i messed up though!

Well i just did the first oil change on my '05 sedan this weekend. I've been researching a bit on here about the topic (how many miles, intervals, oil type, etc)

I noticed some people mentioning the G's oil change could be done at a Nissan dealer. So I called and yes they do, and significantly cheaper too! ($24 bucks vs. $36 bucks, plus the Infiniti dealer is like 30 minutes away).

So I did the oil change there. Here's where I think I might have gone wrong...

When I called Discover Infiniti (San Diego, CA) they told me Penzoil 5W-30 Synthetic Blend is used. Thinking it's standard to use this on a G, I assumed Nissan would use this. After all it was said and done Nissan used Valvoline 10W-30 regular oil.

After all this yapping here's my question...will my engine suffer with using regular oil vs. synthetic blend oil? Should i scrap taking it to Nissan and take it to the Infiniti dealer for future oil changes with the synthetic blend oil?

Thanks for your help!

Suffer? Hell no man, you are just fine. You can use dino (regular oil) semi synth (blends) or full synth. And contrary to popular belief, you can even go from synth back to dino oil. I'd use full synth though, for the extra protection and extended intervals.

Dude, don't worry about it. 10-30 is fine in San Diego due to the weather. The Nissan dealers put that in the 350Zs in SD and they probably get ragged on harder than the G35 anyway. Did you go to Mossy Nissan in Kearny...they have pretty good service and I've been a customer with them for a long time (Maxima). I do like Discover Infiniti in Kearny though and its worth it for me to go there.

I'm not convinced that the syth blends are any better than conventional oil though. I think its just bogus and a way to make more money off the consumer

You DO want to go with the owners manual's recommendation, and I believe it recommends 5w30.

My Nissan dealership has always used 5w30 on my G35. I don't go the synthetic route, though. I figure that changing the oil every 3K miles is good enough, and don't drive too aggresively.

Thanks for the quick replys and points of view (keep em comin'!)

I took it to the Mossy Nissan in El Cajon. I was being lazy and since it came out cheaper I said what the heck and had it done locally vice driving all the way to Discover Infiniti.

I called Mossy Nissan and asked them about the oil...they do offer a synthetic blend and full synthetic oil change and that bumps the price up to almost $50 bucks the advisor said.

With that known i might keep it going at the Nissan dealer we'll see. I have a few months to think about it.

You're fine bro. Don't worry about it. But go with 5W30 next time, and preferably synthetic.

Some don't recommend synthetic until 15K miles. I would not use synthetic yet in a fairly new car.

Use 5W30 if you will see sub-zero temps. If not, 10W30 or 10W40 is preferred.

The manual clearly says, "5W30 is preferred for all ambient temperatures". You can use 10W if it is not going to freeze. 10W is NOT preferred. What part of this is not clear?

They are both 30 weights at operating temps. So you are fine with 10W-30 in the summer.

Just drive and smile.

It's not a problem especailly in the summer. Nissan would certainly have 5w-30 though as all their cars take that. Recommend cahnging to synthetic on the next one.
