Messed up compass by trying to set zone number

I was reading the manual and it had a map showing your geographic zone and it said to hold the compass button for 5 secs and it will show your zone and to repeatedly hit the compass button to adjust your zone to the correct one. I live in NJ and my zone is 9 so I held the compass button down for 5 secs thinking I would see 9 or another number. Instead I got 3 short dashes which don't change even after I repeatedly hit the compass button as per the manual. So now instead of N, S, W, or E showing on the compass I am getting 3 dashes like "_ _ _" I tried turning the compass on and off but when in the on position all I keep getting are _ _ _. How can I get my compass back? Thanks

Drive around in a circle slowly like twice. It has to figure out where it is now.

...If you'd read further in the manual you'd have seen that bit too

That's my favorite little instruction in the manual: (Paraphrasing) Drive in circles until the car figures out where its going.

I do that until I figure out where I'm going.

What you ended up doing is resetting the digital compass. Now it has to recalibrate itself and figure out which way is "north."

Try holding down the compass button, then turn on the ignition.
This should bring it back to normal.
Turn the car off.
Then do the same thing, hold down the Compass button while turning on the ignition. release the button
This time you should be given Numbers, select by pressing the compass button until you find your zone.

"all I keep getting are _ _ _. "

That means the hood is pointed to the sky

Actually, having it try to find itself sounds like a good idea. Anyone know how this actually works? I had the same instructions in my Dodge Caravan years ago and didn't know how driving in a circle helped it out.

To orient itself, you need to drive around in a circle 3 times slowly at less than 5 mph, in one direction, (complete circles), then in theother direction (less than 5 mph).
Find a deserted parking lot somewhere to do this.
