Accord V6 Coupe Faster at 80 to 100 mph?
I was on the interstate cruising at 75 mph in 6th gear. A V6 accord coupe cut in front of me from the right lane, it was very close that it pissed me off
. Just as a sign of disgust and anger i tried to tailgate the guy (ya i tried to act as stupid as him, sorry!). Anyway, from 75 mph in 6th gear, I downshifted to 5th gear and i was at full throttle all the way to 100 mph. But the accord coupe was about one car length ahead of me when we reached 100 mph
. I DONT think he got a jump start on me and it looked like his car was auto and A/C off (his windows were down). I had my A/C on.
On another note, i got my tranny replaced (due to grinding), and the car has been relatively sluggish since then. You think this is a case of a sluggish performance by my G35 or is it that the Accord simply outperformed the G35 in this case for whatever reason. I am probably not the best driver out there, but we are just talking abt straightline performance and all that i could do was to put the pedal to the metal. Or should i have shifted to 4th instead of 5th? But i was already doing abt 80 mph.
What do you think?
Again, i dont feel proud abt my tailgating attempt, so pl dont bash me
. I am just anxious if this incident is confirmation that my car is sluggish for whatever reason.

there is no way a V6 accord can beat you dead stop or on the freeway..i think 4th gear shoulda made the difference..

6th is an overdrive gear, pretty much useless, so 5th can be considered your top gear. 4th should run from about 90 - what, 110/115 or so, 3rd from 60 - 90, you should dropped to 3rd, slammed it into 4th as you are passing him and waved good bye.
Thanks for all the responses. In hindsight, i totally agree, i messed with the wrong gear shift!. Next time i will do better, but hopefully i can control my temper and not do it in an aggravated tailgate situation!.

Ummmm....the 6MT Accord coupes have been tested by the mags as getting 14.3-14.4@99mph stock. There are Accord owners getting 13.9-14.2 out of these coupes. The autos are about .3-.4 and 3mph slower. It is very much a driver's race, fellas.
As for gears, the G owner should have been in 4th if he had a 6MT.
As for the autos, 3rd is good till about 101mph or so assuming you manually hold the gear. At the track I'm tapping the rev limiter about 50-100' after the finish line. My averaged (last 66') trap speed is almost 98mph which means I'm crossing the finish line at 99mph or so.

Going any faster than 70-75mph and you are past 3rd gear's effectiveness. At that speed, throwing it into 3rd will put you in the redline zone, which is of course past the peak point. Going 80mph, the right gear would be 4th - that'll put you around 5000rpm right where the peak starts with enough to rip it all the way to eventually 5th gear, going at around ~100mph.
