That's not necessarily true. In Alabama, dealerships are mandated to use Black Book when appraising a car. On a previous purchase, our local bank that handled the financing used Black Book, not NADA.

The whole KBB/NADA/BlackBook thing is just a reference tool; no single service is going to be dead-on. For example, in Minneapolis ( back in the 1998-2000 timeframe ), several dealerships would appraise trade-ins using NADA ( typically a lower value ), and base used car stock on KBB ( higher ranges ). This delta between the two books could help net them an additional $750 to $1000 per used-car deal.
