Smile Newbie with questions.

Hi I'm new to the forum and was wondering if anyone could help. I've visited the forum a few times and read quite a few postings and I must say I have found it very helpful. As I get closer on getting a new G, I am still wondering about a few things. Any advice, suggestions, comments would be greatly appreciated. First, are you able to use the nav unit in the G as your driving, such as looking for nearest gas, hotel, ATM, dining, etc.? Or does the car have to be stationary? I'm debating whether or not to get nav. Second, is it a touch screen and/or voice recognition like the TLs? TIA

Yes, you're able to use the navi for the things you mentioned while you're driving. It doesn't allow you to put in a new address while driving. The hotel thing, I think it only lets your search user-entered hotels (someone else should verify this...I haven't really tried looking for a hotel yet).

It is not a touch screen and there is no voice recognition. I'm a user interface designer, and I find the interface of the GPS very mediocre. The little joystick thingy is kind of hard to use and it's really touchy (get a lot of unintentional selections from just moving the joystick around).

I still like the GPS and don't regret getting it, but if I had to do it again, I might have looked into an aftermarket unit first....

Hope this helps.

Thomas

Sorry I don't have the Navi but I just can't justify it costing 2 grand. I am currently using a Dell Axim pda along with a bluetooth gps antenna. Cost me around 500 bucks and it works like a charm. I can update the softwares and install all kinds of different Navigation softwares. That plus I can use the PDA for many other functions. When I rented a car last month on a trip I was using the Pda Navi.

IMHO, i don't think nissan's navigation is worth 2k. it doesn't compare to the navi unit on the acuras (no touchscreen nor voice activation). even though my G doesn't have navi, we have an '03 TL-S with navi/onstar and an '04 fx35 with tech package as our other cars. that touchscreen really comes in handy when entering numbers and locations. the joystick does not do justice and it takes so much longer. also, the fx does not allow you to input anything into the navi while it's moving. although many people have bypassed that, it is very inconvenient when you suddenly want to change destinations and find some place new. just my .02

This might be slightle off topic -
I did not like the Navi for the G, not worth 2k (in my opinion). I am also considering using Dell Axim X50v with a BT GPS. Can you tell me what software and reciever you are using?

Good luck with getting your new G. Fine choice, and yes get the navi. It's a wonderful feature that I've had on my Sedan, Coupe, and now on my M.
You won't be sorry.

I bought the BT GPS from Dell also. It came with it's own Navteq software when you buy the Dell BT GPS. I've also used other Navigation softwares. My favorite one so far is Iguidiance v2.1. Occassionally I used another software called Oncourse Navigator 4.

For 1/4 the price of a built in Nav and I can use it for any cars, you can't beat it. Not counting I can use it to watch movies, games, etc. I have the Axim clipped on the vents on my car instead of using the windshield suction holder.

I was debating betweel the TL and G35 for a while. I bought my G last month. If I could've taken the nav system out of the Acura and put it in my G, I would've done it in a heartbeat. The technology is way better - voice control, bluetooth, touch screen. I get really annoyed when I can't have my passenger programming an address or something while I'm driving.

It IS rather cool how it hides away in the dash though.
