990 MIles and the check engine light comes on??

I just bought my G35X and seems like I might have a catalic convertor problem? The exhaust started rumbling and the check engine light came on. It is going into the shop tomorrow. We will see what happens. Ever happen to anyone? Otherwise I love it. HW

Sorry that you have that problem so early in the car's life. never had it happen but I agree it could be your cat conv or a small leak.

I just had the same thing, sounds like it could be the Throttle position sensor. At least that was what went out on mine. Good luck,

I had a catalytic converter go out on my '03 sedan at about 28k miles. Turns out my engine was consuming excessive amounts of oil. My engine eventually failed. I'm pretty sure the two are related, but I can't be positive. I don't mean to alarm you, but you may want to keep a close eye on your oil level.

Thanks guys. I just dropped it off at the dealer. I will see tomorrow when they call me back. Kinda stinks. The car has been great for the first 2 weeks.

Maybe you went over something and banged up the exhaust or cat.?????

They'll fix it up. Can't be much.

Chech the gas cap to make sure that it is seated properly on the threads. This too will make your check engine light come on. Sometimes it's the simple things.

Interesting, in a sad way of course. VQs are notorious oil-burners. At least half the guys on Altimas.net with VQs were burning a little oil -- usually a quart or less every 3000 miles or so. Most manufacturers won't consider consumption to be excessive unless you're well over one quart every 1000 miles. Assuming a leakdown test looks good and there are no other obvious signs of failure, they'll send you on your way rather than spend thousands of dollars to repair a problem they consider cosmetic in nature.

My Altima ate about three-quarters of a quart every 3500 miles. My G35 has 2200 miles on it and has sucked up about a half-quart. Seems kinda typical in my experience.

When you say it "turned out" that your engine was consuming excessive oil, do you mean someone else (i.e. your dealer) discovered it for you? Just curious. And typically heavy oil consumption is a symptom of mechanical engine failure, not a cause unless the owner runs around with a dry sump.

What happen to the other half that is not burning oil? Can the problem be isolated? Like break-in method or driving habits?

I think 3.5 quarts of oil in 1000 miles is excessive. The dealer was doing all my oil changes so if they noticed anything they never told me about it. They tried to blame the problem on my Injen CAI and Borla exhaust which was total BS. I fought them on it and they eventually replaced my engine under warranty. This has happened to at least six other G's that I know of from this forum. Most of those being bone stock. I just hope this isn't what's going on with howie's G.
