harleydood: As you said, I (hopefully) know what I'm talking about. I drove an S2000 (a MY2000) for 2.5 years before getting my G36 6MT (with a VW Jetta 24V VR6 in between). Anybody who is serious about racing the car will have a hard top especially it's required by most, if not all, racing organizations. Having the top down makes the car about as aerodynamic as your average SUV.

As harleydood stated, the S2000 is an amazing car for $32K. It would still be an amazing car at $40K considering its overall performance. I'm not saying that there aren't faster cars for the money. However, it's tough to beat the total package of outstanding performance, awesome race-bred technology, and (nearly) everyday driveability. It's about as close to a pure, purpose-built sports car as you can get (fairly lightweight, no electronic safety devices other than ABS, very few frills, lightning-quick reflexes, etc). The Elise also comes to mind but it's even more extreme.

For $32K, you get a largely hand-assembled, low-production sports car built alongside the NSX in Honda's Tochigi plant. The S2000 was actually the original concept of the NSX (a small, 4-cylinder roadster) until Honda realized they needed something more to compete with the likes of Porsche and Ferrari. And I've read that the complete engine alone is about $16K.

The S2000 is a great track and autocross car. It's a great car on the streets too but anything can happen on the streets. However, a properly-driven S2000 should be quicker than a G35 from a standstill or a roll. The key words are "properly driven" though. It's a tough car to launch requiring high revs and dropping the clutch (from about 6000 rpm) to get the best times and most owners aren't willing to abuse the car that way. But then again, that's not what the car was designed for. From a roll, the revs need to be above 6500 rpm where the engine has to be on the "hot cam" to get maximum response. Below that, you need to wait for the revs to build which can cost you some precious time. Like any true sports car, it requires the driver's complete attention.
