what type of gasoline to use?

Hi, I have a 2004 G35X that I bought a few months back. I've been getting premium gasoline into it and I am wondering if I can just use 87 or 87 octane rating instead of 93.

I don't actually remember what the manufacturer suggests at this time. My old car required premium gasoline, so, I was just using the same in this car too!! :

Thanks for your input!

The minimum octane recommended is 91. You can run a lower grade, the engine will just "detune" itself a little to compensate, and therefore expect lesser performance. You also may want to run a couple of tanks of each and compare mileage, you may find the premium grade offers an increase in economy nearly equal to the premium in price you pay for it. Just a thought.

I personally have not really noticed any difference in performance and economy with 87 and 91 octane.

I will sometimes buy premium when the difference is less than the normal 20 cents/gallon.

There is also mid grade. If you drive a car that requires 91, like I think the coupe does, maybe try 89 instead. Not quite the difference in price, but not the difference in octane too.

Our pilot takes mid-grade, so I have no problems with using 91+... and I try to fill up at Chevron to take advantage of the techron.

I also have a 2004 G35x. From the 2004 Owners Manual:

http://www.infiniti.com/m/pdf/manual...finiti-G35.pdf

"FUEL RECOMMENDATION
Sedan models
Use unleaded regular gasoline with an octane rating of at least 87 AKI (Anti-Knock Index) number (Research octane number 91).

For improved vehicle performance, INFINITI recommends the use of unleaded premium
gasoline with an octane rating of at least 91 AKI number (Research octane number 96)."

If the manual says you can use 87 or higher but you might experience a performance hit at lower octanes then that is exactly what will happen(IE: G35). However, there are some cars(Honda Accord V6) that recommend 87 or higher but they will actually see a performance boost if you use 91 or 93. This is really the same as in the G35 except infiniti rates the cars horsepower on 91 octane where Honda choose to rate theirs at 87 octane for the Accord. They figure most Accord owners would rather save money on the gas than be able to brag that their car has 255 HP instead of only 240 HP.

Use exactly what the car’s manual recommends unless you are not concerned about power. In that case use the minimum required fuel. For the G35 that would be 87 Octane for the minimum and 91 for the rated Horsepower.

One other possible disadvantage of lower octaine fuels is that some Gas companies put their best additives in their premium fuels. Shell is a good example. So I would do some research on the gas you use to ensure that you are not getting short changed with respect to detergents when you buy the lower octaine gas. .

If I owned my G, like I did my CLK, I would put premium in every time. I'm leasing the car though, so I put in regular cause I know in the 3 years I have it there won't be any problems related to regular gas.

When you fill up at a gas station and see a person in a Cl55 or M3 using regular, you know their cars are leased as well as almost anyone who would buy the car outright would definitely know how to take care of it properly.

This topic has been beaten to death, resurrected from the dead, and then bludgeoned to death again. I guess it's still not dead. Someone please kill it, dismember it and burn it to ashes!

And your point is?

Be back in a minute. I'm going to go post a "which is faster" thread followed by a "is this a good price" thread.

Don't forget to start another CAI thread. There aren't nearly enough of those around.

Yes, you can use lower grade. It's stated in your manual.
