Wink Bluetooth + Nav

Refer to thread link below for a review and comments about the TomTom GO NAV system I have been using. It has integreated bluetooth handsfree system which works like a charm.

If it goes on the Nav, then what about people not getting nav? (Nav is separate from Premium package). I suppose it would be like BMW's or on the BOSE thingy...

I'd bet most of the functionality is built into the radio/nav, and the additional parts would include the wiring harness and plate that mounts to the roof, and additional wiring (if any - the data bus might actually already support it) and new plate/buttons for the steering wheel.

Conceivably:

Swap head unit
Run wires to roof console and install plate/microphone
Run wires (if needed) to steering wheel and install new plate/buttons

You have to remember, the 2006 is not a new redesign, and you can bet your **** that Infiniti wants it to be as easy and inexpensive to impliment. I would therefore assume data is displayed on the radio display or the nav screen. Both of these would be cheap functions to add, and easy to impliment during the manufacturing process.

^ so making the display appear on the stereo doesnt require to change the stereo itself? I consider head unit and different radio a big change. Display on NAV would be an easy software change, however, cars without NAV would not get the display.

The coupe doesn't have the nav. system. So I don't think they use the nav. screen to display the incoming call name/ number with the bluetooth system in 06.

Just to add a little to the intrigue. Bluetooth on the 06's could not have been an afterthought. IMO, the redesigned interior of the 05 was built with this addition in mind. If you have an 05, pull down your headliner between your moonroof and domelight. You will find a white bracket that suspiciously holds nothing, but is in the exact location of and appears to be the proper size to hold the control panel shown on the first page of this thread.

This makes me believe that option of retrofitting a bluetooth module into an 05 was at least in the cards when the redesign was spec'd. It is a heck of a lot easier to add a device with the proper mounting infrastructure in place rather than having to do a "hack-o-matic". Whether or not the rest of the 05 subsystem can easily support bluetooth is another question altogether. I have no idea. But at least there is a place to mount the trim panel.

In fact, I was thinking of modifying this bracket to hold the controller for the Alpine H701 processor... but have since decided to do the double-din swap, and go with an aftermarket h/u that can control the H701.

Just some more fodder...

Worst part is, dealers know less than we do so there is no point in even asking =(

Unfortunately I'm not so optimistic that they were thinking about us '05s for upgrading (I wish they would!) I wonder if they originally planned it into the build for '05 and something wasn't ready in time for production, so they shelved it until '06. That might make it easier for us to put it in

Just to add even more speculation, it seems it can't be a part of the nav box itself, since as someone pointed out up there, the coupe pictured above does not have Nav... That leaves separate module or the Clarion head unit. HU would be the least "cool" imho (I hate how little text fits in that window), but it would probably be the most functional, since they could use one of the steering wheel controls to scroll through the phone book.

Alternatively, they could do it where if you don't have nav, you just get simple answer/hangup functionality, but if you do have nav it integrates.

Of course, this is just total speculation, and we'll never know until it's out (or someone official tells us), but it's still fun to think about

If I had to bet though, I'd put money on more integration with the HU. It seems to make for the easiest retrofit in an existing vehicle design. Clarion has probably done it for other manufacturers, a Clarion HU is common to all models, and the steering wheel buttons on the left are likely all part of one wiring harness that feeds into the HU.

Have you found a place yet to buy this? If so, how much?
