04 G35x vs. MB C32 AMG

Hey Folks -

Well, not a great story. I was moving along to a dr's appt on Rt. 2 East (heading to Boston) when a silver flash pulled up next to me and got caught in some traffic. He looked over and grinned, did a couple stupid weaves and was gone. Had this been a couple years ago, I never would have let him get away. Today, however, I stayed back ... for a while.

Without really trying I caught back up w/ him (traffic flow) and we both found a straightline with no traffic. Doing about 65 or so we both pushed it and when I looked down we were doing around 120. I stayed in automatic mode, so the engine wasn't going nuts. I was surprised to see, however, that he was pulling away from me, not by much (~2 lengths), but definitely stronger in that range then the G35.

We ended up next to each other at the end of the highway. He was a younger guy but obviously very content that his $50K car pulled away (not by much) on my $35K car with only a K&N and a Z-tube.

Fastest I've gone in a while but the car felt rock-solid, and was still begging for more.

You experienced guys, would you have expected this?

Cheers!

===UPDATE===

This might explain it ... he has at min a 90 hp advantage and a 200 lb weight advantage. Now I don't feel so bad

I find myself racing a bit more then i ever did in the G35. Its my first car that is not 4 cylinders so the power increase was big for me. Ive raced a few g35 coupes, but thats about it. The C32 has a lot more HP and TQ. I think the g35 is a little lighter on the scale. Good to hear you kept up with him though. The C32 clocks 1/4 mile times in the low 13's and 0-60 in 4.8... wonder how quick the G35 is with a supercharger?

My brother has a C32. He is undefeated in stoplight racing in the Baltimore area. That car is unreal.

I always find it suprising how the G35 sedan feels a lot more stable at 120 than at 90 (sport suspension, no aero kit/body kit/spoiler all stock).

Disclaimer: Don't try to find out on public roads.

AMG is the real deal every time .... no question.

For anybody who likes pushing their Gs, throw it on the track and you'll have an ear to ear grin for the next six months - guaranteed. The bonus is that you'll basically never drive fast on public roads ever again, because you'll know how much better it all is on the track. Not a lecture, just a fact ... I am dying for some more track time and I'm just pushing a stock sedan

it might have been closer if you had a rwd instead of awd

In looking at the specs its amazing what a supercharger will do to a v6

At HWY speeds, I doubt the RWD vs AWD has any effect at all... considering that its 100% RWD on the x until I start slipping. And the weight diff is only about 150 lbs.

closer...not really. C32 AMG is a low 13 sec car stock (easily in the 12's with a pulley change) and will pull even harder on a G35 at higher speeds (over 100) than at speeds lower than 100. The guy you raced probably had the fan/AC on and was not even flooring it at high speeds and still smoked you - as he should. AMG's that are SC/turboed are torque monsters at any speed and will smoke just about anything in their class, and cars much more expensive then they are.

Talking

I still would have raced him anyway though...in my GTO I would have taken him though. In my 05 G35X, I would have known I would lose, but it is still fun!

We still tolerating racing threads around here? 120 on a public highway. Seems like a lot of testosterone and very little grey matter. Oh well at least you were 3000 miles from me and my family, but pity the people in your neck of the woods.

Calejohnson - fair enough.

But I put no other people in danger (though the MB certainly was) as I only did it on one open of 4 lane highway. My days of stupid stuff regular highspeed driving on crowded roads are over - I am one of those neighborhood speed haters on my block!

I've watched a stock C32 AMG pulling consistent 13.3s@107mph at my track. There's no way my G (14.4@97) could hang with that.
