Just installed a coupe midpipe. So far I love the sound but need to figure out how to best stop it from rattling against the crossbar and heatshield below the driveshaft. Has anyone tried just wrapping it with exhaust wrap or do you need to remove the crossbar and bend it? Anyway... I will hopefully post my sound/video clips in the next few days (once I figure out how to host them). If you want to PM me in the meantime I can email them to you.

 

what year do you have and how much did you get the middy for

 

I have an 03. You should be able to pick one up for between $100 and $120 if you can find a coupe owner selling locally. Not sure how much it would cost to ship but it weighs about 23 pounds and is close to 5 feet long.

The heat shield is very thin so it is easy to form it to the shape you want. I left the crossmember in place, but I am thinking about taking it off and reshaping it to get more clearance than what is there.

I have not noticed any rattling except going over very rough roads or high speed bumps. I think for me, the clearance issue is with the crossmember and not the heat shield.

The problem is the bend in the midpipe is right where the cross member bracket is.

The bracket is pretty easy to bend (soft metal)
It's easiest to do off the car in a vise.

B4 you start to bend....
Make a template of the bracket holes on a piece of wood.
Draw lines to represent the angle, then mark the holes.

As you bend the position of the holes change & it won't fit the car if you don't use a template.

The new shape should be something like this pic

 

i put exhaust tape around the pipe, works great.

 

So besides the weight loss and audio diffrence does anyone know is it worth any actual ponies? Even a few? I have a 05 G35X sedan.

 

I actually took off the heat shield and it got rid of my rattling. I couldnt get a straight answer but most people agreed you dont need the shield

 

I wonder if a shop could just hack the oem resonator out, put a small one in like the coupe and add a bit of piping?

 

Yes, they can- many people have done this. It's about $50 in labor.

True. But with the oem, you have the stock flanges and most the oem bends already.

 

The install was really easy... I did it with a friend and it took about 25 minutes. Not sure if it makes a difference with the 05?

Anyway, about the rattle, its worst when I start the car, then I also hear it when going over bumps. I think I'll try to wrap it with exhaust tape first and see how that helps.

Lastly does anyone know if you have to remove the midpipe to get the bracket off (I didn't look close enough when I was doing the install)?

 

No you don't have to remove the midpipe.

The bracket is a simple bolt up...

Actually you need the midi installed to test the shape as you bend it.
