New feet: 5zigen FN01R-C Hyperblack

I couldn't seem to find pics of these wheels on hardly anything, much less a G35... so this thread is as much for that sake as anything.

Wanted some light track wheels... chose the 5zigen FN01R-C in hyperblack... 17X8 in +35 offset. The color almost exactly matches the DG of my sedan... looks kind of nice. I obviously wasn't going for bling, but performance... these suckers are light at 17 lbs. each. I lost 8+ lbs. per wheel/tire combo over the stock 18" sport setup with Turanza ER33 tires, which are still fairly light for an OEM combo considering their size. That's like losing about 130 lbs total vehicle weight (4%) in terms of acceleration and braking, not to mention better suspension response. Or about ~ 10+ HP gain. The FN01R-C can fit over some 14" BBKs as well. I wanted 17s since they are lighter and tires are easier to find/cheaper. Don't feel so bad about wearing them down...

They are wrapped in the new Hankook Ventus Z212 rubber in 245/45-17. Sticky tires, I tell you. The diameter is about .8" less than the stock OEM 235/45-18 Turanza ER33 tires... so a little over 1/4" gain in tire-to-fender gap. Gained a lot of width, though. Supposedly, the weakest aspect of this tire is wet weather performance. Here in central Texas... that's of little concern to me. Plus, I have the Pathfinder...

Positives:
  • Lighter
  • Better Acceleration
  • Better Braking
  • Better Suspension response (less unsprung weight)
  • More selection in performance tires
  • Cheaper tires
  • Fits some 14" BBKs
  • Resonably priced in case damage occurs
  • Hyperblack looks good/harder to "look" dirty
  • Simple design - easy to clean
  • Slightly shorter effective gear ratio (~3%)

Negatives:
  • Not as blingy as 18"s or bigger. Considering the veritable plethora of poontang being hurled my direction recently, I could use a break.
  • Don't like the 6-sided (hexagon) center cap on a 5 spoke wheel. Plus, it's gold-colored.

Those look very good; surprisingly so for their diameter. It's a hard look to pull off 17's on this car, but I am sure the increase in performance is well worth it!

I've been searching for some light weight 17's as well, and am probably going to jump on a set of OZ Superlegga's. Can you PM me with price/vendor info? Also, more pics of them mounted would be great.

It IS hard to pull off 17s for this car... Using a darker wheel helped, and a decent sidewall ratio (45 instead of 40 or less) so it doesn't look as small. I'll take some more "artistic" pictures when I get a chance... these are your standard "just got home, pics in the driveway" shots.

I also looked at the Superleggara, Kosei T1, Enkei RPF01. The Enkeis would be my second choice. I had concerns with the durability of the Kosei, even the higher load rated version. The Superleggara, I had concerns with BBKs... The FN01R-C is stout, while still light. For track use, sometimes too light = weak.

I live in Texas, where Discount tire has retail stores. If you buy online from DTD, they still charge tax (8.25) so there isn't much cost savings. My local store matched the online price with everything, installed. Plus, they have lifetime balance, rotation, etc. They had to special order both wheels and tires, though. And they don't list that hyperblack +35 offset on the website, for some reason.

Since they are a supporting vendor, surely I can post up. If not, tough luck. The package was for (4) wheels and tires, road-force balance, and 20 spline-drive lug nuts. ~$1400 with the tax... From DTD online with no tax (to Cali) it should be ~$1300. Very good bang for the buck, IMO.

Nice job.

Enkei RPM2's are another inexpensive wheel choice. They also look good on the DG, if the mesh look is your thing....
The 18x8 +35 offset is around 18 lbs, and it clears my Stoptech's.

Just to clarify... 14.1" Stoptechs? If so, I'm impressed for a mesh wheel. Usually you need some nice, curved spokes to clear the BBks...

I have the 13" kit, but I am sure the 14" will also clear. The only reason they clear is there is no lip and the spokes are flat but pushed out quite a ways. I also use a +35 offset, some have used a +45 on the same wheel, which obviously will not clear.

On the Stoptech's there is not that much difference (13 to 14), the only real difference is the diameter. The 14" kit would not clear a 17" RPM2 in diameter, but would clear between the spoke and caliper.

I had FN01R-C's on my previous vehicle... lightweight, a great track wheel, but not such a great urban rim, they are susceptible to bends. You should be fine with a 45-aspect tire though.

*thumbs up*

are you still liking them? They are one of my main choices for my obsidian black coupe.

Thought I would post an update.

Its been a couple of months, and still love them. The Hankook tires are great, need a little warm-up for best traction, and actually perform quie well in the rain, dare I say... better than the "all season" ER33 that were on there. And this is a sticky track tire with big rubber blocks. Oh, well. I was expecting poor performance in the rain as a trade-off, but those things are quite stable. I might upgrade to a tire even more suited for dry performance next time, like the new Azenis. Those look really sticky.

I'm happy.
