new g35 breakin period

I've heard many different opinions from: "you don't have to break in cars anymore" to "just be safe and listen to manual." what are your opinions or professional recommendations on this topic?

Re: new g35 breakin period

I followed the 350Z's recommendation of 1200 miles under 4000 RPM, then ripped it, then tore my motor and most of the car apart for modding...I figure the VQ35DE is shared by the 350 and it's a good recommendation...Anyone else have a different suggestion?

Although most of the dealers I talked to told me the G has been factory broken in, I chose to be conservative and avoided going over 3000 rpm for the first 1200 miles. I figure it's not too much to ask for a little peace of mind.

Re: new g35 breakin period

I know what goes on at dealerships because I work at one. And let me tell you - a LOT of the workers do not take care of the cars and could care less about the "break in" period. Especially if the car is a dealer trade. I know many workers who weave in and out of traffic going over 100 sometimes on the freeway, most of the time trying to make it back in time because they are being rushed by the sales manager. Chances are, if your car was delivered with more than 60 miles on it, the car was a dealer trade and may have already been abused.

Read your owners manual... I did it says stay under 4000 rpms and don't drive for long periods at the same speed for the first 1200 miles..

This is unusual for a new car because my 94 Probe GT and 2001 Dodge Intrepid mentioned nothing about break in period in the owners manual.. a step backward?

Re: new g35 breakin period

There has been a lot of conflicting information on this topic, as well as the follow on one of 'should I change the oil after the break in period'. It sounds like the reason for the differences is because technology is improving so fast that conventional (or even professional) wisdom can't keep up. I also called my Infiniti service mgr and was told to follow the break in , but an early oil change is no longer needed since shavings are greatly reduced with better manufacturing technology.

Below are a few links on this matter. One of them has this quote which is pretty much what I decided to do with my new G (and it wasn't that hard to live with) - "So it's up to you, Mikey. You can have a good time for the first 1,000 miles and take your chances. Or you can show a nose-hair's worth of restraint and have a good time for the next 199,000. Your call." Sums it up for me. I just drove more often to get the period over with as soon as possible. Even at low rpms the car is fun. Not worth the risk if you ask me. Just do what your told. Besides it would suck if you had problems with the car under warranty and they pointed out that you abused the car from day one. Not sure if they would or could, but with the computers cars have it is possible to keep track of that stuff.

Re: new g35 breakin period

I beat the hell out of my '95 cavalier z24 from day one (I was 16, what was my dad thinking?) and it still ran like new at 138K miles... that was until a drunk hit me a month ago and totaled it. So, when I get my G, I'll give her about 500 miles and then just make sure I keep synthetic oil in her every 3000 miles and I'm sure she'll keep up with the cavalier's record.
