I have always heard, great things about two tires:

Toyo Proxes
Mich Pilots

I mean no bad comments have I ever read. I don't go to the tire threads ever since they parsed out the forums into neat sections, so I am not current on tires, but pilots I thought were wonderful handling tires. Maybe I'm confusing All Seasons with Summer tire reviews or maybe the 235 thing is not the way to go.

I remember reading marketing material or magazine quotes of the nissan lead engineer who said they made the contact patch taller rather than wider. I never could envision this concept but maybe the stock size is the way to go. I think 215's are skinny but if they make things work best I will just have to stick to stock specs.

What is available now in a 215/55/17 besides Turdanzas and Goodyears?

Just put 235/50-17 rear and 225/50-17 front. Great balance and improvement in handling.
I had that setup before my 19s with goodyear eagle f1s and i had no comlaints whatsoever.

You may not want to stagger the sedan as the VDC does seem to get over zealous afterwards. You acn easily go 235/50s all the way around.

Klubbheads would you be so kind as to post side by sides of each wheel with the respective 225 and 235 sizes? That would be superb!

I have staggered tire setup and have no problems with the VDC.

In 235/50/17 I would get the Michelin Pilot Sport PS2's. Awesome sticky tire and pretty good in the rain. A bit expensive though but if they are good for Porsche OE then good enough for me. The Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 are good tires as well.
