Horrible stop and go traffic results in better MPGs?

Last month I moved to Atlanta, home of the 2nd or 3rd worst traffic in the nation depending on which study you read. I figured since I'd be doing a lot of stop and go, it would kill my MPGs. In Kansas City, I average about 18mpg in the city. Surprisingly, I'm averaging just over 19mpg in pure city driving which includes a lot of crawling and sub 40mph driving. The thing that probably saves the most gas is that people in Atlanta don't do jack rabbit starts and hard braking. When working in Chicago (traffic is nearly as bad) people flat out race from light to light.

When I drove down for the move from KC to Atlanta, my G got over 27mpgs averaging 72mph.

I'm getting just about 21 mpg. This is according to my Navi record. It also has this cool graph over leaf (enviro!). When you drive to get good mileage, the leaf turns more green. haha.

The "miles till empty" feature is pretty accurate. I tried to get it down to about 15-20 miles before empty. When I filled up, it was just about empty.

The trip from KC to Atlanta is relatively flat. Depending on the state, my wife and I were going 65-75mph, very steady cruise. My first tank netted me about 379 miles on 14.2 gallons (26.7mpg). My second tank netted 385 miles on 14.2 gallons (27.1). All gallons amounts were taken from the reciept at the pump. My wife's 98 Legacy GT auto with a roof top carrier was averaging 23-24 mpgs. The carrier was sucking out about 3mpgs. Prior to this trip, my G35 typically saw 24-25mpgs in full highway driving across the hilly and very windy plains of Kansas.

I get an average of 20 - 21mpg. I have gotten 35mpg on a trip from Sacramento to Los Angeles (all freeway). The car just won't get more than that (not that I've seen). 2005 G35 sedan, 20s, injen CAI, Etc

I averaged 26.53mpg traveling from Mpls, MN to Sioux Falls, SD last night. I thought I did great, considering the traffic in Mpls, MN. Im glad I didn't get those 20-21mpg I've been reading about.

Dave not too shabby, I average around 17-18mpg in Atlanta traffic - both city and highway - but then again I also do redline a bunch when I feel like going onto onramps fast. Did you ever put that spacer on? I think for me that has hurt my fuel econ a bit due to the more air = more gas needed.

I keep trying to beat my own record with MPG. Ive been trying different gas, and different speeds. I have a 95% highway w/ no traffic commute, 40miles each way, and do little driving in between 3 of the shifts, so its a good judge.

But EVERY time I think I'm doing good, I get passed by a beautiful girl and have to speed up for a better look. goodbye mpg test till next fill up

New mpg record for my G today. With 150lbs of gear in the trunk (not a square inch left for storage), my son in the back, and wife up front, 90+ degrees outside, A/C on ECON, slightly downgradient (Atlanta 1,200' to Jacksonville sea level, 420 miles), 78-81mph, tranny left in MM 5. MPGs achieved = 28.3mpg (415miles on 14.65 gallons).

I just got 19mpg for the first time. I guess one long drive with all hwy miles helped because I usually get 17 in all stop and go city. I find it strange that my mileage has not really changed in the summer with the ac on all the time.
