Mildew from the AC

In the past couple of days, I've noticed that the AC produces a funky mildew(ish) smell as if there was stagnate water somewhere in my car...but it come from the AC.

I've taken great care of the car and have really babied it since I purchased at the end of May.

Any suggestions or advise? Is it me or do I need to get it looked at?

TIA

Re: Mildew from the AC

I have the same problem and the replies I got on here suggested turning off the AC and blowing fresh air throught the system for a minute or two before garaging the car. I still have the problem though, I think my cabin filter may be going south. I'll probably have it looked at by the dealer sometime.

Re: Mildew from the AC

How many miles have you got? Sounds like the cabin filter-- my AC is on 24/7 when I'm driving... My old SHO had the exact same problem if I hadn't used the AC in a while, but 'flushing' the system with vented air for about 5 minutes usually fixed it. Does this problem happen only on startup and go away as you drive, or is it constant? Every time? Best of luck with it; it's still summer, too, so open those window!

Re: Mildew from the AC

I've had the car for since August 2002, and have 19xxx miles on it. I just started getting the stinking AC problem about 6 weeks ago. I'll probably take the glove box off and have a peek at the cabin filter this weekend. I will let you guys know what I find out.

It also helps to crank the 'HEAT' when you vent the system out. The smell will go away after a few min. ... provided you haven't fried ur face in the process. LOL!

Re: Mildew from the AC

I have had this smell problem with both my SHO and my old eclipse. The filters get moist from outside damp air and start growing new strains of penicilin. you could spraya bunch of lysol or Febreeze by the intake vent (usually locate near the bottom of the front windshield) or buy a new filter.

Re: Mildew from the AC

That's exactly what the dealer told me to do. He said it was mildew on the condenser and that running some Lysol through the system would eliminate it. Once it's gone, make sure your AC is in the Fresh Air mode before you turn off your car (they said this insures you get proper ventilation to that area).
