Hey Folks,
I just got my October '06 Motor Trend in the mail and they have a First Test ("FT") of the '07 G35S(!) sedan (6MT). They also have a brief comparo against the BMW 330i (manual). These are two different articles.

The FT Recap is:
The new G35 taking on the BMW this November will boast more interior and trunk space, more techno toys, an even wider lead in weight-to-power ratio) now 1.8lbs per bhp, up from 1.2), closer gear spacing, and a conservative restyle. Does it have the right stuff to win back the world welterweight sport-sedan title? Turn the page.

Head-to-head:
Round 1: Acceleration - G35S
Round 2: Braking - G35S
Round 3: Figure eight - Even
Round 4: Slalom - BMW (spanked the G)
Round 5: On the road - BMW

1st Place: BMW - Flits like a butterfly, sings like a B3 Hammond. A smooth operator that never loses its cool
2nd Place: G35S - Killer performance and package with refinement that suffers only by comparison only with this BMW.

I haven't even really started to read the set of articles yet, I just wanted to give you folks some info ASAP.

Am I missing something here. With a weight of around 3500lbs and power of about 306hp, wouldn't it be a ratio of ~11.75? Or are they referring to just the weight of the engine, which would make the VQ35HR around 550lbs?

Spec sheet numbers
Hello Folks,
So it looks like the actual weight to power for the G35S from Motor Trend's Head-to-Head spec sheet is different then the number that they reference in the First Test article. Looks like just a misprint.

From the Spec sheet:
weight to power - 11.8 (this is rounded - Actual seems to be 11.77)
306 @ 6800 bhp
268 @ 5200 lb-ft
7500 Redline
Weight 3604 lbs
53/47% - front/rear weight dist.
5.4 sec 0-60
14.0 @ 100.4 - Quarter Mile
112ft - 60-0 braking
.90g avg - Lateral Accel.
2300 - Top gear revs @ 60mph
33k - Base price (est)
36k - As tested (est)
225/50R18 95W (F)
245/45R18 95W (R)
19/27 mpg - EPA
19.7 mpg - MT

ahhh finally torque numbers.
So the 6mt is 0-60mph in 5.4s huh?
That sounds about right with the new engine.

on the one hand that 1/4 time seems slow.
on the other hand, they got 5.5 sec to 60mph and 14.0sec 1/4mi for the IS350...

I think the 0-60 time (5.4s) was slowed by the high temperature and humidity. Motortrend said that the cars were tested under very humid conditions.

As a case in point, the 2006 330i 6MT that they tested alongside the G35 got a 0-60 of 6.2s in this test, which is on the slow side for that car.

C&D got 5.6s for the 2006 330i 6MT, and Motortrend in its 02/06 issue got 5.8s for the 2006 330i 6MT.

If the 330i is pulling those numbers now...the 335i should be quite impressive.

It's Motor Trend's own thing.
