The firmness of a shift, which is directly related to how fast it shifts, is based on the transmission line pressure. This is controlled by the ECU, the stock setting is very soft, for luxury purposes. On some of the domestic transmission like the Ford 4R70W, the line pressure can be changed by a $40 gadget made by B&M or by a chip, and viola you have very fast shifts probably faster than the new advanced 07 BMW 335i auto.
This was the case for the 1st iterations of "slap-stick" manumatics; however, your statement concerning "how fast" a transmission shifts - based solely on Hydraulic line pressure is incorrect.

I never said line pressure was the only factor but it is the major factor involved in how firm/fast a tranny shifts. Get a ride in a car with the line pressure set to 100% and you will see what i'm talking about.

I have no intention of owning a 1988 Monte Carlo SS

Ummm... a 88 Monte Carlo SS doesn't have a transmission controlled by the ECU... try a 2006 Pontiac GTO which is faster than your BMW 335i.

...and also has a much faster depreciation value as well.

Sorry to pick up an old post, I found some info from dealer that I thought
I might share.

1, For my 05 G35x, it is not possible to adjust line presure by TCU at dealer.

2, You can not do Full Line Pressure as teh Maxima through a "Dropping Resistor" Mod, the 5AT does not have a Dropping Resistor. Which means most likely that that 5AT could already achive full line presure under WOT.

#3 is a question:

Has anyone done G35 Line pressure increase not through VB upgrade?
has anyone found a "Shift Kit"?

Oddly enough, comparing apples-to-apples real world numbers (no mods, street tires, etc), they're close enough that it would be a driver's race. That's in a straight line. Hit the twisties and the Bimmer walks away, although the Monaro is no slouch (it's just so damn heavy). Simple bolt-on mods favor the 335 until you slap a Magnacharger or better yet twin turbos on the GTO, in which case you unleash the LS2's beastly potential.

By the way, I'm a GTO fan. I think Pontiac had a great package but marketed the car all wrong.
