IS250 on order... Too late to cancel?

Here's my situation...

Over a month ago, I totalled my car after some guy cut me off in the rain. After a week of research I narrowed down my new car search to the IS250, G35, and TL.

The TL had no AWD option so I decided against it. The 2006 G35 drove beautifully, but came up short in design and interior quality. The IS250 drive was mediocre at best, but I thought the interior quality and design was impressive.

I knew the 2007 g35 was coming out soon but I was on the fence about the new exterior design after seeing few photos on the web. I needed the car sooner than later so a month-long wait was not ideal.

After negotiating a great deal on a 2007 IS250, I put a deposit down and was told I'd get the car soon. A week later, a car with the exact options I ordered was finally located but wasn't scheduled to come in for another 2 weeks. 3 weeks later it still hasn't come in yet and now the new g35 launch is less than 2 weeks away.

I stopped by my local Infiniti dealer a few days ago to check out the new model. The 2 issues I had with the 2006 version were fixed on the new model. The new interior and exterior is much better. The car looked 10x better in person compared to the photos I saw on the web.

Today I finally got notice that my IS250 has come into port and I should get it in a day or two, but now the new g35 has me regretting my order.

Am I too late? Is it possible to get out of my deal without losing my deposit? The IS250 is a great car, but I'd hate to be driving it around wishing I had a g35 instead.

It was a bad move on my part to put money down on a car that wasn't physically there yet. It was another bad move to check out the new g35 knowing my car was coming in soon.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Sorry for the novel.

The money you put down, was it refundable? I made a deal on an 07G35 and put down a $500 deposit but I made sure to get in writing that it is refundable since I have not driven the car yet. I am sure I will love the drive since I loved the way the 06 drove. But still got that in writing just in case. I am sure you can make a case with the GM and tell them the car came in much later than you were initially told. Anyway, good luck and let us know how things turn out.

You should have no problem getting your deposit back. If the 07 G35 is the car you really want, then definitely do not get the IS250. Why spend all that money on a car that you won't be completely happy with. Besides, the IS250 is about the same money as the G, yet half the car IMO. Good luck.

How much was your deposit?
Even if you loose it, it'll be cheaper than deciding 6 months from now that you made a mistake.

The other thing to consider, is offering the sales associate something for their trouble.
I had this happen when my business cash flow took an unexpected turn for the worse.
I backed out of a deal & offered the SA $100 for their trouble;
He turned it down, but seemed pleased that I offered it.

Thanks for the feedback. I normally ask for "refundable" in writing, but in this case I didn't. I thought I was getting the car in a few days. I put $1500 down.

Offering the sales person something for their trouble isn't a bad idea. I'll see if I can work that angle. Thanks.

It's worth it to lose a couple hundred to get the car you really want.
What's $500 in the long run for a $35,000 purchase?

Does anyone know how much a sales person normally makes off a car deal? Is there a specific percentage over invoice difference or something along those lines?

Any chance that the Lexus dealer owns an Infiniti dealership? Mine does. This would make it easier.

Something in the order of 20%+ of gross profit.

Car selling price - car cost x 20% = commission

Yes it does. It's one of the bigger dealerships in the area. The Infiniti dealership I went to is actually the same dealership but in a different location.

Well, there you go. Tell them you want to switch to an Infiniti. They won't be loosing a sale this way. Also, they shouldn't have a problem selling the IS250 unless it was ordered with some realy weird options.

Well that is great to hear. This should be a no brainer now and you should be able to get your $1500 deposit transferred over to a G35. Keep us posted how make out.

Do whatever you can to get the new G. The new VQ35HR engine is an awesome engine, the G is better in every way over the IS250.
