350 Owner Test Drove an 07

WOW!

WOW! WOW! WOW!

I didn't come from a slouch Z. I had an enthuisiast w/ intake, exhaust, 19's, eibach etc....

WOW!

First off, the features.. man are they cool. The Non Nav interface is beautiful, bright colored screen that is viewable at all times of the day. Gorgeous interior styling. The new seats are so awesome. They grab you even MORE than the 350 seats, keeping you locked in place for those high speed runs.

So the pickup.. OMG. Will SMOKE the 350. SMOKE IT. Bolt on 350's need to fear the g sedan. The paddle shifters WOW!... so quick and so much a part of the driving experience. Doesn't feel forced at all like shifting in manual mode of the 350.

The ride and handling are superb. Can't beat a car that can cruise and take turns hard.

Overall, I'm INCREDIBLE impressed with this automobile. I said it in another post, my FX should FEAR the next time I make the trip to the dealership, cause I HAVE TO HAVE THIS CAR..

*Sigh* Your poor FX is getting no love right about now. I understand your feelings about the new G which is why I'm going to attempt to keep my FX and purchase a new G

I can Tell you the Auto 07 G35, Is Damn Quick! I test drove one on Sat, and on the freeway, I floored it at 60mph and it Down Shifted and took OFF Like HELL! All the way to REDLINE! And before I knew it i was doing a little over 100Mph With EASE! and pulled very strong! Also On Car and Driver Mag review...they had the Auto do an 1/4mile of 13.9 at about 100-101mph. And that Test Drive Pretty much sold me! I Now have a 07 6spd Sport on Order! So It's Safe to say the New G will most likely Kill an Mildly Moded 350.

Sweet! I was at a light and a late model G35 coupe (which I take is the equivalent of the 350Z) drove around me on the right shoulder and peeled out when the light turned green. The ridiculousness was I didn't care to engage in this foolishness. Perhaps if I were driving the new sedan he wouldn't have been such a moron!

Anyone know how the dyno figures of the new G and the Z match up?

One thing to keep in mind is that, in recent years, the manual Z engine had more power up top but less in the midrange than the automatic Z. I haven't been able to find specs for the 2007 350Z, but the G35 coupe's slightly weaker VQ specs out:

Auto: 275 hp@6,200, 268 ft-lbs@4,800, so Z probably 282, 272
Man: 293@6,400, 258@4,800, so Z probably 295, 258

2007 sedan: 306@6,800, 268@4,800

Compared to the automatic engine, the significantly higher power peak and unchanged torque stat suggest that the extra power is all up top, above 6,400 rpm or so. Which shouldn't be that helpful.

The 2007 G sedan weighs about 300 pounds more than the Z. So it's power-to-weight ratio is a bit worse than that of the automatic Z, and its torque-to-weight ratio is even worse.

So, is there something Infiniti's not telling us? Was it not a coincidence that the 306 figure exactly ties the IS 350?

One thing to keep in mine on HP is last year the manufactures had to switch over to the new SAE ratings. What was interesting is when they went back and retested some of the cars, and mostly the imports, they lost as much as 20HP. The US made cars did pretty well.

In fact the new Z06 Corvette was suppose to come out at 500HP but under the new SAE testing it actually did better and came out at 505HP.

So back to the G. The new G is now rated under these new testing rules so at 306HP if this car came out a couple of years ago it might have actually been rated at 310 - 315HP.

So looking at the 350Z if we measured the HP today using the new SAE ratings what would it actually be? So the spead in hp from the Z to the G maybe greater then you think.

The figures I posted above are estimates for the Z based on the numbers for the G35 under the new standard. Nissan isn't faring as badly as Toyota and Honda, which appear to have taken the most advantage of loopholes in the old system. Looks like the VQ is getting a 5-10 HP adjustment, depending on application.

So either the new G really isn't quicker than the Z, or it's actually under-rated. Hence my dyno question.

Well...how much hp do you think entry level luxury sedans should have? I think 306 is bordering on excessive (don't get me wrong...the more hp the better but lets be realistic). I think Infiniti wanted to focus more on the luxury (interior) and handling aspect of the car rather than the hp/tq. Just a thought. Those are the two aspects of the car that needed the most work for the next gen and they addressed them. Infiniti gave its G 306 hp to be competitive with Lexus and BMW. Nothing more than a marketing stunt, imo.
