My 1st cd on the music box!
My 1st cd on the music box!
Downloaded my 1st cd to the music box and I have to say I'm very impressed with the sound quality. My goal is to get all my music on the music box then CF cards if need be. I hate having cd's all over the car in every nook and cranny getting scratched.

When you rip CDs onto the HD, what format does it use to store the songs as? i.e. MP3, WAV, WMA....

Don't get me wrong the new G has some great things going for it, but they really borked up the whole MP3 portion of their stereo.
For me, moving to the new G from my '98 maxima with an aftermarket in dash stereo designed in 1999(yes 7 years ago) would be a big step down in functionality... It isn't supposed to work like that..
Maybe they will put out an update to the computer's software at some point with an update to change this functionality.
I would make the suggestion to infiniti. That's really all that can be done. I think the conceptualized functionality is leading-edge and I can appreciate the balance between convenience and safety. Though, I do see jn's point.

What bitrate
So what bitrate are MP3s that are ripped from CDs? I heard 105 or 132 kbps, but 105 is way too low for even semi-decent sound and 132 is insufficient still...
Can I use my own MP3s on CF at 320 kbps?

Yeah I think 132kbps or around there - that is way too low even when done right.
Playing off the compact flash I think is fine at high bitrates, but only about 2GB per card.
If, the 2008 has the iPod integration I'll prolly get one, though I hope it won't be restricted to iPods though I know it will be..

Found it in the PDF manual
Page 214: when ripping CDs to hard drive the recording quality can be set to 105 or 132 kbps. Default is 132. This is lame!
Page 199: supported MP3 8-320 kbps, including VBR; WMA with no DRM 32-192 kbps, including VBR <- applies to playback of MP3/WMA from CDs/CF

If it's safety they're concerned about I suggest they disable the volume **** and channel changer while moving as well. To hold the Music Box out separately as off limits while driving is ridiculous.
